  • The announcement of the party’s “five guarantees” was made by the Congress President, Mallikarjun Kharge
  • The guarantees include women’s welfare schemes

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday revealed the “five guarantees” made by his party for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, which will include women’s welfare, health care, rights to land, and justice in the death of singer Zubeen Garg.

While speaking at a public rally in Naoboicha, Kharge laid out several key points in his announcement, including monthly unconditional cash transfers to women, a cash grant of ₹50,000 to women launching a new business or expanding their existing business, a cashless health insurance policy of ₹25 lakh for every family in Assam, land pattas granted permanently to 10 lakh indigenous people, and a monthly pension of ₹1,250 to each senior citizen over 65 years old. He also announced plans to establish a separate department specifically for issues pertaining to senior citizens.

Aside from discussing the five guarantees, Mallikarjun emphasized that Congress will ensure that justice is served to the family and friends of Zubeen Garg within 100 days of Congress being elected in the next elections.

He believes that these five guarantees will provide a road map to socially and economically improve conditions in Assam and help all citizens of Assam; whether they are women, youth, farmers, tea workers, or small-scale business owners, by meeting their basic needs.

He pointed to examples of corruption and abuse of public land by the BJP-led state government as a major reason why Congress needs to be elected to take over the state government. He further stated that throughout the state of Assam, public land has been given to specific individuals and corporate businesses as rewards for providing support to BJP leaders, primarily located in Delhi.

Mallikarjun also lashed out at Modi, alleging he has been asking him for support for the state despite being implicated in multiple corruption scandals. In that respect Kharge said that Rahul Gandhi had gone personally to talk to the communities in Manipur affected by violence.

He stated the Government has used administrative powers to create a culture of fear and has employed perversion through any means necessary to divide the citizens of Assam. He believes the ideology of the congress is congruent with the beliefs of Srimanta Sankardeva and that everyone must be treated equally.

At the end of Mallikarjun’s speech, he stated that the congress has produced many talented leaders from Assam that have helped make Assam better off, including Gopinat Bordoloi and Tarun Gogoi and that he is seeking the support of the people in the next election.
