Kerala Plans 10,000-Voice Choir and Women's Night Event

Kerala is preparing to celebrate the country’s 80th Independence Day with two major public programs highlighting national unity, cultural expression and women’s freedom in public spaces.

Kozhikode will host a mega musical event featuring 10,000 singers, with organizers aiming for a Guinness World Records achievement. Meanwhile, Thiruvananthapuram will host an overnight gathering of women focused on safety, freedom of movement and empowerment.

Organized by the Thiruvananthapuram-based collective Pattinte Koottukar, the national integration program ‘Keralam Padunnu Desathinayi’ will take place at Freedom Square on Kozhikode Beach.

Union Minister Suresh Gopi will inaugurate the program, with Minister A P Anil Kumar presiding over the event. Minister K M Shaji will release Ganamelakalude Charithram, the first publication from Pattinte Koottukar Publications, authored by B Venugopalan Nair.

The highlight will be the 10,000-member choir which will be assembled in the shape of an Indian map. The singers will be presenting 'Jana Gana Mana' and 'Sare Jahan Se Achha' – both national and patriotic songs, in an eight minute presentation.

Then a 20-member team will sing 'Vande Mataram' and then, there will be a 30-minute program called ‘Swathanthrya Samara Sangamam'.

The organizers, general secretary Panachamoodu Shajahan and chief coordinator Nayas Ilyas say it is an enlarged version of a program which was held at Shankhumukham beach in Thiruvananthapuram on last Independence Day with 1,210 singers.

The organizers are now looking to ramp up participation to a massive extent in an attempt to get into the Guinness World Records.

The preparations commenced six months ago and the participants mobilized from all fourteen (14) districts. The venue was changed from Thiruvananthapuram to Kozhikode, which made it easier for the people to attend, especially those from the northern districts.

Karaoke programs, free singing competitions and Mappilappattu competitions were held throughout the state to motivate the people to participate. The organizers have also established a hierarchy of coordinators; one coordinator for each 25 singers and another team coordinator for each 10 coordinators.

Registration will start at noon, and the participants will be given the saffron, white and green color of the national flag as uniforms and cap.

The Women and Child Development Department is organizing an overnight event in the capital to build women's safety, confidence and freedom of movement. The program will begin at 9.30 PM on Friday (August 14) and continue until 1 AM on Saturday (August 15), covering the stretch between University College Junction and Ayurveda College Junction.

The program uses the word Resurge to convey the idea of revival and new beginnings. According to the organizers, its central message is that freedom should not end when daylight fades and that women should be able to claim public spaces at night without fear.

The event will bring together women working night shifts, students, entrepreneurs, athletes and members of the public, while highlighting issues of safety, self-defense, health and mobility.

The night will begin with a women's bullet-riding rally, followed by a cycling rally involving 25 members of the She Cycling group. A skating performance by 40 girls from Team Poojappura and a Kalaripayattu demonstration by 40 girls are also planned.

The Kerala Police will conduct special self-defense sessions, while other attractions include an open Zumba session, a Wall of Freedom where women can record their thoughts, and cultural programs featuring dance, music and poetry.

Around 30 women entrepreneurs will showcase their products, giving the event an additional platform for women-led businesses.

Organizers have also planned police help desks, She Team deployment, information on safety applications and helplines, first-aid facilities, ambulances, drinking water, restrooms, food courts and a night market.

The program is being coordinated by the Women and Child Development, Home, Police, Public Works, Local Self Government and Transport departments, along with the Women's Commission, Youth Commission, Kudumbashree, voluntary organizations and student groups.

Together, the two programs seek to give Kerala's Independence Day celebrations a distinctly participatory character — 10,000 voices coming together in Kozhikode in a tribute to the nation, and thousands of women gathering in the capital to assert that freedom and safety belong to public spaces at night as much as they do during the day.
