Independence Day 2026: What Freedom Means to Indian Women Founders
By: Supraja Mohanty, Senior Correspondent
On the 80th anniversary of India's Independence Day, six Indian women entrepreneurs discuss their understanding of true independence, women’s entrepreneurship and women’s role in writing India’s growth story.
As India celebrates its 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026, the country will mark eight eventful decades since the country became independent in 1947. These eight decades have seen a significant evolution of the concept of independence, especially for the country’s women. Over the years more and more Indian women have been able to choose their own path and have even gone on to influence entire industries.
This transition is evident within India’s ecosystem of entrepreneurs. As the flagship government initiative, Startup India reaches its tenth anniversary in 2026, the programme has more than 200,000 DPIIT-recognized startups with 48% of those startups having a minimum of one woman director. There is further proof of women’s increasing participation from the economic perspective since, according to the World Bank, India’s female labor force participation has risen from 22.9% in 2018 to 35.3% in 2025, and reaching 50% can boost GDP by one percentage point.
But women’s independence is not just reflected through statistics. For women entrepreneurs, independence means financial and emotional self-sufficiency; having the courage to do things differently; and having the opportunity to set new directions for themselves as well as for others.
On this Independence Day 2026, six Indian women founders speak about what independence means to them and the role women entrepreneurs are playing in writing India's success story. Let’s hear the thoughts from six women founder, what they have to say.
