  • The Karnataka State Government found the Foxconn factory at Bengaluru to be the benchmark for manufacturing units in India
  • Foxconn is a leading electronics company in the world and also a major contractor of Apple

The state of Karnataka has termed the Foxconn-manufacturing plant set up in Bengaluru as the “benchmark” for the entire Indian manufacturing sector.

The Foxconn Group, which is a leading electronics producer globally and is known to be a major partner of Apple for the production of iPhones, has invested over 2 billion dollars in the facility set up in the state of Karnataka. The plant has already started production and would produce 20 million iPhones.

As per the minister, it has created around 30,000 jobs so far with almost 80 percent women in employment, and it is expected to provide jobs up to 50,000 in Phase 1 at peak capacity in terms of employment.

The project is believed to provide jobs to youth as well as women in and around Bengaluru and assist in building manufacturing in Bengaluru as well as in Karnataka.

ANI conducted an interview with them, in which an employee, referred to as Sridharan, claimed that they provide employment opportunities for many locals. The employee, who works in the testing lab as a technician, has been working at the plant for about one and a half years, saying:

"This plant provides enormous employment opportunities for many locals. It is entirely involved in the production of products, and it is one of the biggest plants in Asia, which is sprawled across 400 acres of land."

Speaking on workforce strength, he stated that currently, the company employs a total of 25,000 permanent workers in its factory, with another 50,000 to 60,000 contract workers. He indicated that the total workforce is expected to rise.

Earlier, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, too recognized the efforts made by the Karnataka government when he said that in just eight to nine months, 30,000 people were hired in what is one of the fastest factory ramp-ups in the country.

He further added that many of these employees were first-timers in the form of women joining the workforce in huge numbers.

Apple has also started expanding its iPhone production in India, which was facilitated by the production-linked incentive scheme initiated by the government in 2021.

In the wake of the changing global supply chain, India has become a significant production destination for Apple.
