  • The Inspire Institute of Sport and the Rowing Federation of India have launched the women’s rowing program
  • The initiative has been undertaken to support the women rowers of India before the international events

The women's rowing program commenced as collaboration between the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS) and the Rowing Federation of India (RFI) with the goal of increasing India's presence internationally in rowing through various competitive formats such as the Asian Games and the Olympic Games.

A total of 24 elite-level women rowers will participate in this program, which will be hosted at the JSW Group's RWP-3 training facility located in Bellary.

The launch of the program was led by IIS President Manisha Malhotra with RFI President Balaji Maradapa as the Chief Guest for the event.

Manisha spoke about the program stating, "This women’s rowing program will allow us to provide support and training for women rowers through our collaboration with the RFI."

IIS's current COO, Tathagata Mukherjee, said: "Rowing is one of our primary foci, and we have spent time and resources investing in both infrastructure and high-performance systems during the past twelve months. Based on the success of some of the rowing teams at the recent Asian Rowing Championships in 2025, we believe that continued training and support will lead to additional success in rowing."

Maradapa referred to this as a new chapter for rowing in the country and stressed the importance of developing a systematic method of using international rowing experiences to develop the rowing community within the country.

He stated that the six-week training camp held in Melbourne has helped to improve rowers' technique and performance.

The first portion of the program was initiated with a sports science test that occurred at IIS between February 18 and February 25, 2026. During this time, performance testing occurred for 30 athletes.

After this first phase, 24 athletes were chosen to move on to the next level of structured training based on the results of their performance testing.

The initiative has succeeded in qualifying boats in the Women's Coxless Pair and Women's Coxless Four for the Asian Games.

Diljot and Suman have been identified as the rowers for Women's Coxless Pair, and Jigyasa, Tendenthoi, Aswathi, and Gurbani as the rowers for Women's Coxless Four, with Aleena and Bhagyasri to serve as reserves.
