The India Women's cricket team started their series against Sri Lanka Women with a victory of eight wickets at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam to take an early lead in the five-match T20 International cricket series, 1-0.
India chased down the score of 122 runs in just 14.4 overs. The chase was led by Jemimah Rodrigues, who scored an unbroken 69 runs off 44 balls, with 10 fours.
She equalled Mithali Raj for the highest number of innings scoring 50 runs or more by an Indian batter against Sri Lanka in Women's T20 Internationals.
Smriti Mandhana contributed 25 runs, and in doing so, she became only the second female cricketer in history to pass the 4,000-run mark in T20 International cricket, following in the footsteps of New Zealand cricketer Suzie Bates.
She reached this milestone in fewer balls than Bates. Smriti and Jemimah added 54 runs for the second wicket before Jemimah and Harmanpreet Kaur (who finished with 15 runs) put on an unbroken 55-run partnership for the third wicket.
Earlier, India decided to bowl first and pegged Sri Lanka back to 121 for 6 in their 20 overs, thanks to a tight bowling display. Three Sri Lankan batters were run out, while Kranti Gaud, Deepti Sharma, and Shree Charani took one wicket each.
Sri Lankan opener Vishmi Gunaratne, playing in her maiden tournament, made 39 off 43 balls. Captain Chamari Athapaththu was dismissed for 15, while Hasini Perera made 20 and Harshitha Samarawickrama contributed 21. The Lankans reached 100 in the 17.4th over but never looked like accelerating the rate of scoring.
Deepti Sharma was the most economical of the Indian bowlers, ending with 1 for 20 off her four overs. Kranti took 1 for 23 and Shree one wicket for 30 runs.
