The occasion was held to recognize the efforts of Indian cricket teams, including the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup-winning team under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, who beat South Africa by seven runs in Barbados.
The win was highlighted by their fast bowling display in the death overs and a vital half-century by Virat Kohli (76). The ICC Women’s World Cup-winning team emerged victorious against South Africa by 52 runs at DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai through exceptional performances by Shafali Verma (87 and 2 wickets), who scored a masterful century and took two wickets, and Deepti Sharma (58 and 5/39).
The blind women’s team won the Women’s T20 World Cup for the Blind Championship by defeating Nepal by seven wickets in Sri Lanka to achieve a target of 115 runs.
"We are beginning the New Year with a very special occasion. All three cricket teams, the senior team, the women's team, and the blind cricket team, are here assembled, and I, on behalf of all Indians, pay homage to them this evening for the immense joy and happiness they have brought us." This was said by Nita Ambani, as reported by a press release.
Thinking about the true influence of sport, Nita has added, “Sport brings hearts and India together. We are united in victory. We are here to celebrate their success.”
The center of the celebrations was the three World Cup-winning Indian captains – Rohit Sharma, Harmanpreet Kaur, and Deepika TC who had brought home the trophies through their determination and spirit.
The function was graced by leading representatives from all three World Cup-winning sides, including Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, and Ganga Kadam, apart from cricket legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, and Ravindra Ashwin.
The event was also marked with the presence of Olympic and Paralympic winners, including the likes of Murlikant Petkar, Deepa Malik, and Devendra Jhajharia, and leading figures of the entertainment world, including Amitab Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, among others, thus creating a very rare combination of leading figures of the nation.
The event was a reflection of the vision for sports as a medium that leads to unity through excellence and inclusion, rejoicing in success and the spirit that personifies India's sports movement. And it is none other than Nita that owns this vision.
