India Bags 50 Medals at Asian Shooting Championship; Manu Bhakar Wins Team Bronze

  • Neeru Dhanda won gold in the women's trap even

Indian shooters continued their winning streak at the 16th Asian Shooting Championship at Shymkent, Kazakhstan and finished with a total of 50 medals.

Dhanda, a Trap Women shooter earned a gold medal, while Payal Khatri, Naamya Kapoor and tejaswini earned gold, silver and bronze medals respectively in junior women's 25m pistol on day eight of the championship.

Neeru (107) and Aashima Ahlawat (107) progressed to the finals in women's trap qualifications, with Preeti Rajak falling short.

Aashima finally had to content herself with bronze having 29 hits after falling short in a shoot-off, while Neeru swept the final, having her last 10 targets consecutively to win gold with 43 hits. Qatar's Ray Bassil placed seventh with 37.

The Indian trio also bagged the team gold with a total score of 319, leaving Chinese Taipei way behind.

At the junior women's 25m pistol, Naamya topped qualification with 581, while Tejaswini came in second with 577.

Payal qualified sixth with 569. In the final, Payal shot ahead in the last rounds with 36 hits to win gold. Naamya came in second with 30 for silver, and Tejaswini, off a recent ISSF Junior World Cup victory, bagged bronze with 27.

The three, along with Riya Shirish Thatte, also won team silver at 1700 points, behind Korea.

In trap for men, Bhowneesh Mendiratta picked up silver after shooting 118 in qualifications and collecting 45 hits in the final, two short of China's Paris Olympic silver medalist Qi Ying.

Meanwhile, in women's 25m pistol, India's Manu Bhaker and Esha Singh missed medal chances. Korea's Olympic title-holders Yang Jiin and Oh Yejin were eliminated early, while gold and silver medals were claimed by China's Zhang Yueyue and Xiao Jiaruixian and bronze by Vietnam's Thu Vinh Trinh.

Manu was fourth after 22 hits and Esha sixth with 18. They, along with Simranpreet Kaur Brar, claimed team bronze with 1749 points.

India tops the medal tally with 28 gold, 10 silver, and 12 bronze medals and has three days left in the championship.
