HER House, a culturally responsive refuge for South Asian women and their children, was launched in 2016 by the Harman Foundation in Western Sydney. HER House, a shelter for women and children in crisis, has provided safe accommodation to over 100 women and 22 children over ten years. Over 500 more have received case management without staying onsite, and over 2,000 families have been supported through community empowerment programs.
Harinder Kaur OAM, Founder of HER House, mentions, "We found that people were struggling, especially international students. They had nowhere to go. Some couldn't afford rent. Others were fleeing abuse with children in tow." She adds, "In our culture, stigma and shame are big barriers. Women often fear what the community will say. There are language gaps, religious differences, visa-related fears, and some survivors are actively threatened by their partners."
HER House, run by the Harman Foundation, is a sanctuary for South Asian women and their children, survivors of domestic, family, and sexual violence in Sydney. It provides culturally-sensitive support and is more than just emergency accommodation; it is a community-rooted initiative that addresses the specific needs of these women, many of whom remain hidden in Australia's domestic violence statistics.
HER House's staff, who are trained professionals, are seen as extended family members by the women they serve. The service provides trauma-informed, non-judgmental case management, ensuring a safe, stable, and empowered environment for women and their children.
