Ekta Kapoor has been the first Indian to get the International Emmy Directorate Award, marking a watershed event in Indian television. The honour was bestowed upon Kapoor during the 51st International Emmy Awards, held during the World Television Festival in 2023.
"I think art and writing and storytelling have a far bigger impact than we gave it credit for," Ekta said after accepting the prize. “Now that I've been recognized by this worldwide platform on a global stage, I'm just thrilled and humbled."
"This honour has made me feel a little responsible," Ekta added. “I believe that the voice that has been given to me must be used for the benefit of others and to convey the tales of those who are not being heard."
In an Instagram message, Ekta said, "India, I'm bringing home YOUR Emmy."
Meanwhile, Indian actress Shefali Shah was nominated for Best Actress at the International Emmy Awards for her captivating performance in Netflix's crime thriller "Delhi Crime" Season 2. During the opening cocktail hour, Shah, dressed in a gorgeous JJ Valaya ensemble, paid respect to Indian design.
Shefali Shah was beaten out for Best Actress by Mexican actress Karla Souza, who was awarded for her part in the film "La Caida" (Dive).
Shefali expressed her thanks and joy over her nomination on social media, writing, "OMGGGGG I still can't believe it. I am honoured to be nominated for an International Emmy alongside such talented artists."
Shefali’s nomination was a watershed moment for India and Netflix, demonstrating the platform's dedication to produce high-quality content. In "Delhi Crime" Season 2, Shah's portrayal of DCP Vartika Chaturvedi addressed themes of justice and empathy against the backdrop of real-life events surrounding the notorious "Kachcha Baniyan Gang."
Despite the defeat, Shah is appreciative for the honor, saying, "This one is really special, especially because it is for a character I am very very close to, Vartika Chaturvedi, and for my favourite show, Delhi Crime 2." This is for everyone in Delhi Crime."
The 2023 International Emmy Awards highlighted the worldwide effect of Indian talent and narrative, cementing the country's prominence on the global scene.
