DG Shipping lauds TS Rahaman for Successful Women in Maritime Ratings Programme

The Directorate General of Shipping has recognized the Training Ship Rahaman (T.S. Rahaman) for successfully launching the 4th batch of the Women in Rating Programme, which empowered 80 rural Indian women to join the maritime workforce with scholarships totaling Rs 72 lakhs. The landmark initiative, launched two years ago, aimed at empowering young women from rural India to pursue seafaring careers.

T.S. Rahaman's Women in Rating Programme is a model for maritime gender inclusion, supported by major players such as Maersk. The programme offers sea-time placements and stipends, ensuring real-world exposure and employment. Eligibility criteria include a 10th standard with 40% English and science/maths or a two-year ITI diploma. The holistic training ecosystem includes safety, seamanship, and hospitality skills.

T S Rahaman, a respected maritime training institute in Navi Mumbai, India, was established in 1910. It offers pre-sea and post-sea programs for aspiring seafarers, including a B.Sc. Nautical Science for deck officer training, Maritime Hospitality Studies and Culinary Arts for shipboard service roles, and GP Rating and Maritime Catering certificate courses for entry-level maritime careers. Approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, it is affiliated with the University of Mumbai and the Indian Maritime University.
