  • Shree Charani of India and the Delhi Capitals spin bowler, hopes for a WPL champion title for the Delhi team in the forthcoming league
  • Jemimah Rodrigues has also been named as the captain for the next installment

India and Delhi Capitals left-arm spinner Shree Charani is hopeful that the team will finally win the Women’s Premier League title in the next edition, to be led by the new captain, Jemimah Rodrigues.

Captaincy has changed in the team as the former team captain, Meg Lanning, has been released before the next edition.

Shree was originally released by the team but was later re-signed after the Delhi team shelled out Rs.1.30 Crore to sign her on, after her impressive performance in the Indian Women’s World Cup campaign of 2025.

She was an essential part of the Indian team that lifted the title and was the second-highest wicket-taker in the team with a total of 14 wickets.

India's run at the World Cup, however, encountered some difficulties, as losses to South Africa, Australia, and England brought India on the verge of being ousted from the competition.

Following their disappointing show against England, their head coach, Amol Muzumdar, had a stern word with the players, as described by their captain Harmanpreet Kaur in an interview.

This seemed to do the trick as they won against New Zealand to enter the semi-finals. As quoted by Charani, this tough word from their coach acted as a reality check that helped India win the World Cup.

“We were confused when we lost three games on the trot because we had those games in our hands. Then amol sir’s serious speech was in our favor. After that, things went in our favor, and we won the World Cup," Shree told IndiaToday.in.

The Indian team has been participating in a host of functions after their triumph, including meetings with the Prime Minister and President, as well as appearances on television. After close to two months of activities, the players’ attention has reverted to cricket as the WPL 2026 begins on the 9th January.

Shree also added, "Life hasn’t changed dramatically. We were busy with some events and celebrating after the World Cup, but all of a sudden, everything is back in line, and we are all focusing on cricket."
