China, Kazakhstan Lead Women's Chess Olympiad after Round Seven

China and Kazakhstan remain at the top of the league following their tie (2-2) at the seventh round at the Women's Chess Olympiad on Wednesday. The Indian and Georgian teams managed to elevate their positions by beating Germany and Poland respectively.

The match proved competitive throughout, with Kazakhstan having more chances to clinch the match victory. At the highest board, Zhu Jiner tied up with Bibisara Assaubayeva, whereas at the second board, Song Yuxin played to a draw with Alua Nurman.

The bottom boards delivered the important scores. The success for the Chinese team came via Lu Miaoyi against Meruert Kamalidenova, while the draw for the Kazakhstani side came from Elnaz Kaliakhmet’s win against Yan Tianqi. The final 2-2 score secured the same standing for both teams.

India and Georgia, the two highest-seeded teams in the tournament, have improved their standing with wins over Germany and Poland. The defending champions secured a 3.5-0.5 victory, moving their total to 12/14 and bringing them within one match point of the leaders.

For India, victories by Humpy Koneru, Divya Deshmukh and Savitha Shri made all the difference, with Vaishali Rameshbabu playing to a draw with Elisabeth Paehtz. The overall victory brought the defending champions to 12/14 match points, putting them one point behind the leaders. The Indian team has now put themselves back in contention in terms of reaching the top positions as the tournament enters into its final stages.

Savitha, just 19 years old, he managed to win the sixth straight game against Germany’s Lara Schulze. Savitha is currently rated as the seventh seed of the under-20 women’s live ratings and keeps adding considerable points to India’s overall chess tournament results as the defending champions stay at the forefront.

Georgia improved their position in the standings winning 12/14 points in a tough battle against Poland (2.5-1.5). The second-seeded team won due to their victories of Nino Batsiashvili and Lela Javakhishvili. In return, Poland won with Oliwia Kiolbasa defeating Nana Dzagnidze, while Meri Arabidze and Monika Socko had drawn their game.

Following a setback in the initial rounds, Georgia has recovered well and is steadily moving forward with its ranking. At present, Georgia’s rank stands at par with India and is only one point away from the top rankers. Thus, a tough competition exists among the front runners

The next round could turn out to be very important from the perspective of the entire ranking. India is scheduled to take on the Kazakhstan team, while the Chinese squad is set to play against the Georgian team. All these games involve competing teams that are close to each other at the top of the standings.
