  • Ashwini Bhide took over as Municipal Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation
  • She is the first woman IAS officer to occupy the post in the history of the corporation, which is now 160 years old

BMC Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide was sworn in on Tuesday. She is the 1st women IAS Officer to ever hold this position since BMC was established, 160 years ago.

More than half of senior positions within the BMC government are now held by women including Ritu Tawde as the Mayor and Kishori Pednekar as the Leader of the Opposition. Additionally, 3 out of the 4 Statutory Authorities at BMC headquarters are currently occupied by women.

Ashwini responded to a question from the press regarding the increased media interest surrounding her appointment by stating: "There has never been a woman appointed to the role before so this has been getting considerably more media coverage than what is normal. The level of expectation is still the same."

Ashwini is a member of the IAS Class of 1995 and was slated to take over as the BMC Commissioner following the retirement of Bhushan Gagrani, who served for 23 years.

She took inspiration from Bhushan's similar backgrounds and regional roots and was happy to be taking over for him.

Several senior-level positions in the Mahayuti government have been filled by women recently, including January 2024’s Rashmi Shukla as first female Director General of Police and Sujata Saunik Named as the first female Chief Secretary of the State.

Other prominent female leaders within BMC are Rajeshree Shirwadkar, who chairs the Education Committee, and Trushna Vishwasrao, who chairs the BEST Committee.

The Mayor Ritu congratulated Ashwini on her new position, which reflects a greater level of women being placed in civic leadership positions, and further stated that coordinated leadership would achieve developmental goals for the city.
