- A workshop of three days was organized with commissioners and engineers of 77 municipalities
Andhra Pradesh Government is prioritizing enhancing urban infrastructure at the top level, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister P Narayana said.
He asked the municipal commissioners to see that all development projects under way in towns and cities are completed on time.
The minister opened a three-day workshop for 77 municipalities' commissioners and engineers. The workshop was supposed to focus on large urban development projects that were targeted to be completed by 2029 with specific directions on improving implementation and monitoring.
Narayana directed officials to manage solid and liquid waste, drainage, roads, and streetlights. He advised that a significant amount of legacy waste from 85 lakh metric tons accumulated in the state had already been removed and that the state would remove 20 lakh tons of waste by December.
2025, which would leave them with total waste capacity going forward, fully operational, by January 2026, as well as claim that they would build six more waste-to-energy plants, to supplement the two already operational, to eliminate cities as dumpsters.
On management of liquid waste, the minister stated that the government is building new drainage systems to manage household wastewater and rainwater in an efficient way. Under the AMRUT 2.0 program, attempts are being made to give drinking water connections to 90 percent of urban households within two years.
Narayana also reiterated that municipal funds, funds under AMRUT, AIIB, and the Urban Infrastructure Development Fund (UIDF) should be used efficiently towards drinking water, drainage, and road development works, which are to be given priority.
He also went through the progress of TIDCO housing schemes, instructing officials to distribute completed houses to beneficiaries on every Saturday to achieve 100 percent completion within the next June.
The workshop was presided over by Director of Municipal Administration Sampath Kumar, TIDCO Managing Director Sunil Kumar Reddy, and Public Health Engineer-in-Chief Prabhakar Rao.
