India’s Ancy Sojan Edappilly secured a silver medal in the women’s long jump at the Asian Games 2026 in Nagoya after a dramatic final round saw her miss gold by just two centimetres. The Kerala athlete recorded a best effort of 6.53m, but China’s Huang Yingying produced a 6.55m jump with her final attempt to move into first place.
Key Highlights:
- Ancy Sojan wins silver with a 6.53m jump in Nagoya
- China’s Huang Yingying takes gold with a 6.55m final attempt
- Shaili Singh finishes fourth after losing bronze in the final round
Ancy had led the competition for much of the final. She opened with a 6.49m effort before improving to 6.46m in her third attempt and 6.31m in the fourth. Her fifth-round jump of 6.53m put her firmly in gold-medal contention. Huang, who had matched Ancy’s 6.49m earlier, saved her best effort for the final round and edged ahead with 6.55m. Ancy’s last jump measured 6.49m, leaving her with silver.
The result marks Ancy’s second consecutive Asian Games silver medal in women’s long jump. She had also finished runner-up at the Hangzhou Asian Games, held in 2023 after being postponed from 2022. Her latest podium finish further strengthens her record at the continental championships and adds to an impressive 2026 season.
Earlier this year, Ancy broke a 22-year-old Indian national record held by legendary long jumper Anju Bobby George. She produced a 6.88m jump at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar in June, surpassing George’s previous mark of 6.83m. World Athletics currently lists 6.88m as Ancy’s national-record personal best.
The 25-year-old from Kerala entered the Asian Games final as one of India’s leading field-event medal contenders. She had already won silver at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships and bronze at the 2026 Asian Indoor Championships. Her Nagoya silver adds another major international medal to a season in which she has established herself among Asia’s prominent long jumpers.
The result also ended India’s hopes of a double podium in the women’s long jump. Compatriot Shaili Singh was placed third for most of the contest after registering 6.42m. However, China’s Tan Mengyi produced a 6.46m jump in her final attempt to move into third place, pushing Shaili to fourth.
Ancy later reflected on the narrow outcome, describing herself as proud of securing another Asian Games silver while acknowledging that she had hoped to change the colour of her medal this time. Her performance came despite the challenging conditions in Nagoya, where drizzle and a wet track affected the competition.
Ancy’s silver was part of a productive day for Indian athletics. Sarvesh Kushare also won silver in the men’s high jump, while India added bronze medals in the women’s 200m, men’s decathlon and women’s 3000m steeplechase. The athletics contingent continued to build India’s medal tally at the Aichi-Nagoya Games.
For Ancy Sojan, the Nagoya podium represents another significant milestone in a breakthrough year. While the gold escaped her by the smallest of margins, her 6.53m silver-winning performance extends her Asian Games medal record and keeps her among the leading names in Indian athletics.
