Bangladesh to Launch 100 More Buses for Women Commuters

The Bangladesh government plans to launch 100 more buses to facilitate women travelling to schools, colleges and workplaces. The decision was discussed at the first meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges.

The meeting was held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban under the chairmanship of committee chairman and Jatiya Sangsad Whip Rakibul Islam. Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam, State Minister Md. Razib Ahsan, committee members and senior ministry officials attended the meeting.

The proposed expansion of public transport facilities is aimed at improving mobility for women and providing better access to education and employment. Officials informed the committee that the additional buses are needed to address existing transportation requirements.

Road safety was also one of the prominent concerns that were discussed during the meeting. Efforts have been made to find out risky intersections and accident-prone areas throughout the nation's road network, officials said. These will be straightened and widened as necessary and measures will be put in place to minimize the risk of road accidents.

The meeting also included a discussion on the design of new road projects. New roads will be planned along straight lines wherever possible, as part of the measures being taken to improve the safety and traffic flow of the roads, officials said.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee examined the total activities of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges and different divisions of the ministry. Issues of restoring discipline on the roads and highways and enhancing the transport infrastructure of the country were discussed.

The committee also suggested conducting a spot check at one of the present or recent luxury hotels which are under the service area of the Karnaphuli Tunnel in 72 acres of land. The proposed inspection will enable the committee to gain a better understanding of the resort and its current state.

The meeting was attended by officials of the Road Transport and Highways Division, Bridges Division, relevant government agencies and the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat as well.

The projects that the committee talked about include both public transport and road projects. The extension of bus services for women, along with the measures undertaken on accident-prone roads and road design are part of the continuous effort to improve the road transport infrastructure and safety of the roads in Bangladesh.
