- Its main goal is to alleviate period poverty in all communities
According to a press release released Monday, Amazon India has begun the second phase of its women's health initiative, with the goal of reaching two lakh women and girls by 2025. By giving women from marginalized community’s access to locally produced sanitary products, health education, and business opportunities, the program aims to combat period poverty.
Vice President of Amazon Logistics India Karuna Shanker Pande spoke at the launch event at the Singahalli Community Centre in Bengaluru. Beyond just improving hygiene, this program promotes local leadership, breaks long-standing taboos, and creates economic opportunity. Women are being empowered to take the initiative and drive change that will benefit future generations.
Over 50,000 women and girls in 130 villages and 14 cities have already been impacted by Amazon, which currently runs four sanitary napkin production facilities in Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. By 2027, Amazon hopes to have helped more than 500 female entrepreneurs establish sustainable businesses and increase access to menstrual health care.
This project expands on Amazon's current Gram Mitr and Pragati Mitr initiatives, which were introduced in 2021 and are designed to support adolescent girls' and women's menstrual health in underserved and rural areas.
