Women Must Lead Their Own Future: Delhi CM Rekha Champions Financial Empowerment
By: WE Staff | Tuesday, 27 May 2025
- Women must have financial empowerment in order to take control of their lives and futures
- To be able to make their own decisions, women need to be financially independent
Rekha Gupta, the chief minister of Delhi, highlighted the importance of women's financial empowerment at a recent event, saying it is a necessary first step toward obtaining leadership positions, financial resources, and autonomy. She emphasized that women are in a position to make their own decisions and take control of their own lives when they are able to reach their full potential.
According to her, "Power in families has traditionally been associated with the primary breadwinner, a position that is primarily held by men, leaving women financially dependent." The topic of discussion is setting a new direction for women. It is my duty as a leader to assist and mentor the women in our state along this journey and to fortify their resolve. It's time for India to carry on the tradition of social reformers who have fought for women's rights.
She also emphasized the urgent need to eliminate long-standing social barriers like female infanticide, opposition to widow remarriage, and girls' limited access to education. Although these advancements were difficult to achieve and necessitated substantial changes in social and cultural attitudes, Gupta acknowledged the increasing representation of women in a variety of fields.
During the event, O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) and the Global Women Foundation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support research projects, leadership opportunities, and academic collaboration. This was a significant development.
This collaboration intends to host collaborative conferences, symposiums, and workshops, support live projects and student internships, and promote the exchange of research professionals. The initiative aims to create a dynamic forum for innovation, leadership development, and intersector communication by coordinating JGU's global academic reach with the Global Women Foundation's emphasis on empowerment.
True financial independence is about more than just income, as Jindal Global Law School Executive Dean Dipika Jain emphasized. She asserted that a woman who is unable to manage her money is still susceptible to outside influences in her community, family, and place of employment. "Women can live with dignity, make their own decisions, and escape exploitation or violence when they have financial freedom."
