Neelam Vaidya: Where Chemistry Meets AI for a Sustainable Future
Neelam Vaidya
CEO, Viridischem
Across industries, Indian women leaders are increasingly shaping businesses, advancing technology, and driving innovation on a global scale. Their journeys reflect strong academic foundations, diverse professional experiences, entrepreneurial courage, and the ability to turn opportunities into meaningful solutions.
From technology and science to healthcare and sustainability, they are demonstrating the global potential of Indian talent. One such leader is Neelam Vaidya, CEO, ViridisChem, whose career brings together chemistry, computer science, technology, entrepreneurship, and sustainability.
She began her academic journey in India with a bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Jai Hind College, Mumbai. Her strong interest in mathematics and physics later led her to pursue a master's degree in Computer Science from Syracuse University in the US.
Vaidya subsequently spent nearly 25 years in the software industry, working with startups and global organizations including IBM, Sun Microsystems, and NASA. At NASA, she contributed to advanced technology projects, while her experience at IBM and Sun Microsystems strengthened her expertise in software and technology infrastructure.
In 2005, Her entrepreneurial journey began at the intersection of science and technology. Alongside her chemist husband, she founded the company Chirosolve and helped commercialize unique high-throughput screening kits designed by him for identifying and separating chiral molecules, that was used by pharmaceutical and agrochemical companies worldwide.
In 2015, she combined her chemistry and technology expertise with her passion for sustainability to establish ViridisChem alongside her son. Today, the company offers AI-driven solutions such as Chemical Analyzer, Reaction Analyzer, Formulation Analyzer, and Safety Data Sheet Builder for multiple chemical-intensive industries. Her journey exemplifies how Indian women leaders can leverage multidisciplinary expertise to create innovative solutions with global relevance. Let’s hear from her.
Our objective is not to replace scientific workflow but to help scientists make better decisions earlier during the development cycle by providing safer but commercially viable options
How have your career experiences shaped your leadership approach at ViridisChem?
Every stage of my career has shaped my approach differently. My years in software industry taught me how to build reliable technology, manage complex projects, and solve problems systematically, while entrepreneurship taught me to turn innovation into practical products. At ViridisChem, I am involved in everything from product strategy and specifications to administration and marketing.
One of my biggest lessons has been the importance of listening to experts. I believe in bringing together different perspectives, validating ideas, and creating simple, intuitive solutions that help scientists understand complex information and make informed decisions quickly.
What milestones have helped turn ViridisChem’s vision into a practical industry solution?
One of our key milestones was identifying the gap between the enormous amount of chemical information available and its quality and usability. Contradictory and incomplete data from different sources, particularly environmental, health and safety-related information convoluted scientist’s decision-making.
We also recognized that chemists had to make critical decisions without sufficient toxicology knowledge. . To address this, we developed a highly curated chemical database with a strong focus on toxicity and predictive insights.
We were applying AI to these areas even before it became mainstream. Today, our highly focused Cheminformatics platform and products offering in-depth insights on chemicals, reactions, and formulations, are helping turn this vision into practical solutions.
How does ViridisChem ensure its AI-driven insights are meaningful and reliable for scientists?
Our objective is not to replace scientific workflow but to help scientists make better decisions earlier during the development cycle by providing safer but commercially viable options. Our tools can highlight chemicals and complex mixtures with health and safety risks, suggest functionally equivalent safer alternatives, identify suitable solvents, and flag potential incompatibilities.
Our Reaction Analyzer also helps scientists to compare different development paths for qualitative selection and optimize the reactions for better yield and minimum toxicity footprint. Much of the information we provide is predictive, so laboratory testing remains essential. However, our platform gives scientists a clearer direction on where to focus their testing and investigation.
This can help reduce unnecessary rework, improve decision-making, and make product development more efficient while allowing scientists to retain control over the final scientific decisions.
How is ViridisChem addressing the needs of different industries while building a global business?
Different industries have different requirements, but chemical safety and sustainability are common concerns. Pharmaceutical and agrochemical companies use significant quantities of chemicals during manufacturing, including highly toxic substances, and our solutions can help identify safer options earlier.
Cosmetics and household product companies often depend on suppliers for formulations and may have limited in-house chemistry expertise, so we provide additional insight into formulation safety and chemical incompatibilities.
Regulatory requirements also vary across the industries. Our Safety Data Sheet Builder supports current compliance requirements and multiple languages, helping us address industry-specific needs while building a scalable global platform.
What is your vision for ViridisChem’s future growth, innovation, and global impact?
We have recently completed the development of two products that we are particularly excited about—the Reaction Analyzer and the Safety Data Sheet Builder. Our immediate priority is to increase awareness, strengthen customer adoption, and reach more companies across different industries.
We want R&D teams to understand how our technology can support safer, faster, and more sustainable decision-making. In the longer term, I would like to see chemical intelligence and sustainability to become part of every decision-making during product development. If safer alternatives are identified early, companies can minimize toxic waste, avoid costly redesigns, and develop products with a lower environmental impact.
What has shaped you as a woman entrepreneur, and what advice would you offer aspiring women leaders?
One of the most important lessons I have learned is to listen to experts and never hesitate to ask questions. I did not begin with deep expertise in chemistry, so I learned by speaking with scientists, listening to different perspectives, and validating what I heard. I also believe that people are willing to help when you are working towards something meaningful.
Women sometimes place unnecessary limitations on themselves because of how they think they may be perceived. My advice is to remain curious, keep learning, and never be afraid of unfamiliar territory. My mantra is simple: do not let fear of the unknown stop you from pursuing meaningful ideas.
