The Psychological Impact of Layoffs: How to Recover, Rebuild & Move Forward
By: Priyanka Vyas, Content Writer
As mass layoffs become an increasingly common reality, their impact extends far beyond lost jobs and disrupted careers. In this feature, Women Entrepreneurs Review brings together expert insights and practical, evidence-based advice from mental health professionals to help individuals understand the psychological impact of layoffs, build resilience, and move forward with confidence.
“It was just another day… until it wasn’t!”said a corporate professional after a sudden layoff announcement.
“What happens when stability, once promised, is withdrawn overnight?”
What follows next is often a phase where individuals are consumed by the fear of job loss and uncertainty more than the event itself. This reflects the harsh reality of ‘Abrupt Mass Layoffs and the heavy toll it takes on professionals.
Mass layoffs is not an isolated issue anymore that affects only a few, it is a possibility we all face.
Hard Numbers behind the Layoff Wave
As Indian corporate giants pivot towards AI-driven efficiency, the ‘unseen’ layoff is forced to become the new normal.
Over 25,000 IT sector jobs were lost in early 2025, with projections estimating more than 40,000 additional layoffs in 2026. Tata Consultancy Services alone is estimated to account for nearly 20,000–30,000 job cuts, while major global firms including Microsoft, Intel, and Oracle have also announced workforce reductions.
Most recent to join the layoff wave in 2026 are tech giants Meta and Microsoft, both accelerating AI investments. Meta plans to cut nearly 8,000 jobs, about 10% of its workforce, alongside freezing new hiring. Microsoft is shifting from an “aggressive hiring model” to a “leaner one” through layoffs, voluntary retirement packages, and hiring freezes, positioning AI as its primary strategic focus.
Women Entrepreneurs Review magazine brings to you an insight into the emotional and psychological realities of layoffs that often remain unseen. While mental health advocates such as Ritu Bhardwaj and Ashita Mathur explore the deep emotional and psychological effects of job loss, psychologists like Namrta Mohan and Karishma Mehra offer actionable guidance to help individuals cope and rebuild confidently.
The Psychological Burden of Layoffs
Ritu Bhardwaj, Founder and Director, Connected Minds Wellness, sheds light on how layoff is not merely a personal event but a systemic one, affecting multiple layers of an individual’s life. “The current wave of layoffs in India is often discussed in economic or organizational terms, yet its psychological impact is equally profound and deserves careful attention.
Loss of Identity: Job loss or layoff results in the loss or erosion of identity. When individuals derive a significant portion of their self-concept from their professional role, its abrupt removal can create a profound internal void.”The question of “Who am I without this role?” becomes central, leading to confusion, diminished self-esteem, and an existential questioning of purpose and direction.“This experience, sometimes described metaphorically as “identity theft,” reflects the extent to which modern work culture can narrow identity into a singular dimension, making its loss particularly destabilizing,” says Ritu.
Emotional and Cognitive Responses: She deepens the conversation by sharing that the extent to which an individual is affected by layoff depends on multiple interacting factors and the degree to which identity is exclusively tied to work.
“In the immediate aftermath of a layoff, individuals commonly experience a cascade of emotional and cognitive responses. Shock and disbelief often emerge first, especially when the event contradicts expectations of security or performance-based continuity. This may quickly give way to anxiety and fear, rooted in concerns about financial stability, employability, and future uncertainty,” Ritu explains.
Alongside this, feelings of shame and self-doubt frequently surface, as individuals internalize the experience and begin to question their competence or worth. For some, anger or a sense of betrayal may arise, particularly when there is a perceived mismatch between their contributions and the organization’s decision.
Trauma-like response: According to Ritu, a job loss may be felt like an identity theft often resulting in a trauma-like response. “From a psychological standpoint, it is important to recognize that layoffs can, in certain circumstances, trigger trauma-like responses. While not every individual will experience a layoff as traumatic, the sudden loss of employment can function as a life-altering event, particularly when it is compounded by other stressors or when work constitutes the primary source of identity. Individuals may exhibit heightened vigilance about future uncertainties, avoidance of re-engagement with the job market due to fear of rejection, or a sense of emotional numbness.”
Psychological Implications Vary for Individuals: The psychological impact of layoffs is not uniform and each individual may react differently.“The extent to which an individual is affected depends on multiple interacting factors, including personal resilience, financial security, social support systems, prior experiences with adversity, and the degree to which identity is exclusively tied to work. Two individuals in similar circumstances may respond very differently; one may experience profound distress, while another may navigate the transition with relative adaptability,” Ritu further adds.
This variability underscores the importance of cultivating inner resources such as emotional regulation, self-awareness, and psychological flexibility, which can buffer the impact of such disruptions.
Understanding the Social Implication of Layoffs
Layoffs do not affect individuals in isolation. They reverberate through an individual’s broader ecology, influencing family dynamics, interpersonal relationships, and social functioning.
The primary challenge individuals face after a layoff is financial strain.“Financial strain can create tension within households, shifts in roles and expectations may occur, and the individual’s sense of social confidence may be altered,” says Ritu.
Additionally, individuals end up losing their daily routine which has a multiplier effect on one’s mental health. Ritu Explains, “These emotional responses are often accompanied by a loss of structure, as the absence of a daily routine can lead to reduced motivation, disrupted sleep patterns, and a general sense of disorientation.”
Social Media Usage: The LinkedIn Effect
Ashita Mathur, Clinical Psychologist, Program Head and Mental Wellness Architect, Connected Minds Wellness, shares insights on how social networking platforms should be judiciously used keeping in mind their dual effects. “Platform like LinkedIn have played major role in providing job opportunities and building professional network. How one utilizes it depends on once mindset. If a person sees it as competition, or comparison and keeps scrolling many times in a day than it leads to feeling of inadequacy, anxiety that other people are writing intense posts about their work, promotions, job change etc and I am unable to. This leads to low confidence and increased frustration.”
Karishma Mehra, Psychologist, Relationship Expert, Connected Minds Wellness, adds “LinkedIn doesn’t create conflict or fears it only amplifies my existing stories and fears about self and others. Hence, we need to be mindful.”
“LinkedIn and various other platforms are specially built to amplify and highlight your work-oriented achievements and accomplishments, which in turn validate you and make you more saleable in the job market. The inverse repercussion of this phenomenon is sense of lack one feels when compares oneself to others. A sense of feeling small and inconspicuous and unworthiness settles in and definitely can make one spiral in their own story about being good enough,” Karishma elaborates.
Mindful Social Media Usage is the Key: It is indeed important to be mindful about social media usage and ensure we navigate this misalignment with care and caution.
Karishma reiterates that the online comparison tends to drain an individual infinitely. “One has to be mindful in using these platforms only for the purpose defined clearly. Curtailing it to be used as a mere tool and not a mirror reflecting my fears or feelings is a mindful way of saving my sanctity in this overcharged community of people.”
Making authentic connections and bonds over and above these professional engagements can be helpful in keeping one safe in the mind. Setting intentional boundaries with work related engagement on different work platforms will help curb the filtration and the fears of comparison and beliefs like ‘I’m not good enough etc’.
Rebuilding Life: Navigating Recovery after Job Loss
While mass layoffs are sudden and unexpected, often their impact goes far beyond and leaves individuals emotionally scared. To regain one’s self-esteem and stability, mental health experts sharesix key actionable steps that can lessen the burden of these turbulent times building an individual organically.
Family and External Supportive Environment: Sudden Layoffs hit hard not only to individual but also to families. The person ends up feeling left out amongst other colleagues and it triggers stress hormones as thinking pattern shifts.
An individual’s attempt to stay grounded often stems from the support received during this turbulent time. Ashita points out “As human beings we all need a social structure; we need community and when work structure is disturbed the sense of belongingness reduces and feeling of being lonely intensifies. So, it’s important that one seek support and networking.”
In tough times people definitely need family support and family must provide supportive environment rather than pressurizing, blaming or making negative comments.People should make an effort to meet people from different walks of life to gain a fresh perspective. Support acts as a catalyst and helps the laid off individual keep their confidence and motivation alive.
Nurturing the Body: Dwelling upon the importance of self-care during this phase Karishma notes that “Our body is the temple in which our soul resides. Respecting the body, working with it for it helps nurture and nourish the individual internally and body wise.”
“Journaling and time out for self from the routine also helps an individual from time to time to gauge life, expectations and experiences for self. Taking the pause gives the individual an understanding of what’s working and what’s not and hence supports and realigns the individual with their sense of self,” adds Karishma.
In case routine functioning is interrupted by these emotions it’s time to take professional help. There are many support groups as well as individual therapy sessions options available.
Build a Routine-Ashita is of the opinion that the power of a daily routine cannot be undermined. “Unemployment when slips deep into one’s routine may lead to clinical anxiety and depression. It is important that one maintains a routine like getting up on time, going out for walk, spending few hours regularly searching or applying for job, connecting with people. This helps body maintain a rhythm to function.”
Karishma adds on that the importance of routine in any and every walk of life is a key factor to build, maintain and sustain self at any level. “Routines don’t have to be heavy duty narratives but small steps and small indispensable steps that one takes in order to bring the shifts one needs. It also reboots and creates a sense of momentum and motivation for an individual, particularly helpful to engage the mind into more constructive thinking rather than going into the unemployment story of questioning and over-thinking.”
Building a Future-proof Mindset- Speaking from a deep psychological perspective, Namrta Mohan, registered Psychotherapist (RP) and Founding Director of Talk Heals Psychotherapy also sheds light on the growing job uncertainty in today’s workplace has made it increasingly important for individuals to future-proof their mindset and build long-term emotional resilience. “Developing a resilience-growth-success mindset, learning emotional regulation, and practicing cognitive reframing can help individuals navigate uncertainty more effectively.”
In today’s uncertain job-market it is also important to normalize uncertainty with a sense of acceptance. “Limit exposure to information overload, and build strong emotional, social, and professional networks. Creating meaningful community ties can further strengthen an individual’s sense of belonging and emotional resilience,” suggests Namrta.
Namrta further specifies that organizations can be pivotal in helping an individual transition smoothly post lay off.
What organizations can do: Namrta shares “Organizations should provide mental health support services, communicate with transparency and compassion, and offer career transition support during such periods of uncertainty.” Companies can also ensure access to career resources, strong professional references, short-term financial relief policies, and skill development or enhancement programs. “In addition, regular post-layoff check-ins can play an important role in offering continued emotional support to affected employees.”
Layoff is not the End: The Way Forward
Ultimately, a layoff is not just an economical event, but a complex life transition that has the power to manifest itself in myriad ways in an individual’s life. Its impact runs deep affecting stability, identity, and social ecosystems. Yet within the uncertainty, lies the opportunity to cultivate pillars of strength, purpose, and long-term resilience. A strong familial support, meaningful social interactions, and dedicated focus toward rebuilding professional life, becomes the source of keeping one grounded and upbeat for leveraging new opportunities.
