Safiya Mehbaliyeva: Systems-Driven Founder Transforming Luxury Resale Industry

Safiya Mehbaliyeva
Founder, Gemaee
Dubai

The luxury resale and premium jewellery sector is no longer a secondary market. Instead, it has emerged as a strategic force reshaping the global luxury economy. The industry is largely informed by consumers who view luxury as an emotional purchase and a financial asset.

Defined by circulation, and not by acquisition, the industry reflects a structural shift toward conscious consumption and portfolio-driven purchasing.

Visionary leaders like Safiya Mehbaliyeva, address this shift by establishing a professional ecosystem, run by governance, authentication precision, and education-led transparency.

Operating from a founder’s vision, Safiya, an analytical driven entrepreneur with a PhD in cybersecurity, leverages years of experience to approach business with precision, discipline, and depth.

As Founder of Dubai based luxury resale and premium jewelry platform, Gemaee, she is driven by clarity and operational discipline to elevate resale into a structured, trustworthy, and scalable industry.

Safiya follows a research-led approach to create a robust system, where she identifies gaps within Dubai’s resale and jewelry market. Aligned with this, she ensures streamlined access, rationalizes pricing, and promotes resale as a professional industry.

Take us through your professional journey before turning into an entrepreneur. What crucial lessons did you pick up during the early years?

Before becoming an entrepreneur, my career was rooted in academic and research. I completed a Master’s degree and a PhD in cybersecurity and went on to teach at the university level. These experiences instilled a discipline of systematic thinking and thoughtful analysis which continue to inform how I built and scale businesses today.

My early years taught me that meaningful outcomes are build through sustained effort and restraint. Academic work required showing up consistently, even when progress was incremental.

Working in academic also reinforced patience and intellectual humility, while creating credibility that comes from acknowledging what is unknown yet. These principles later became central to how I approached building my own business.

With Gemaee I intended to bring structure and credibility to the luxury resale space

What inspired you to establish Gemaee? What was the underlying idea behind the venture?

The business idea was conceived based on a gradual identification of an emerging opportunity, as opposed to a defining incident. Having moved to Dubai, I recognized just how embedded luxury was into everyday life, yet there was an overall lack of structure and definition within the second-hand market.

The difficulties faced in terms of trust, authenticity, and user confidence contributed to an opportunity to create a more credible and definitive second-hand luxury market.

With Gemaee I intended to bring structure and credibility to the luxury resale space. The idea supports a desire to professionalise resale, applying rigorous standards, clear purpose, and ethical practices. Dwelling on long-term trust particularly around authentication and transparency, was positioned as the foundation of the business, not an afterthought.

What responsibilities do you shoulder as Gemaee’s Founder? How do you balance between the creative and business aspects of being an entrepreneur?

My role as the primary leader allows me to share my expertise through engagements at various levels. However, I have been actively involved in strategic planning, sourcing standards, brand development, talent acquisition, authentication, and key business decisions.

Staying creative with commercial discipline involves the need to maintain a hands-on role with those areas that require creative input, yet apply rigor to enable scale and sustainability through good business fundamentals.

How has your entrepreneurial growth journey been so far? Have you encountered any challenges while scaling up Gemaee?

Gemaee’s growth has been steady over the years. Our most significant challenge has been ensuring operational excellence through our growth. Our development has required us to move from founder-led execution into more systems and people-led execution.

Hiring people who are a good cultural fit turns out be a significant aspect of the process. Safeguarding customer trust at scale has also been a key piece.

Growth taught me the importance of channelizing progress through improving how we do things, not necessarily how quickly we do them. Removing ourselves from the equation to improve how we execute and build foundations was hard, not least in a dynamic city like Dubai.

What is your entrepreneurial vision and roadmap for the future of Gemaee?

The future of Gemaee is not defined by the numbers we achieve, but rather by the thoughtfulness we provide for future growth. Growth of our retail presence, digital platforms, and regional markets is important, but it is conceptually grounded by maintaining the brand’s integrity, discipline, and unity across customer experience. I envision a future where the brand evolves with consistency and value.

In the coming two months, Gemaee will launch its first phygital luxury resale store at First Avenue Mall, Jumeirah. The store will blend a curated offline boutique with a seamless digital shopping experience.

I envision that Gemaee will become synonymous with ethical luxury resale, where codes of authentication and transparency are well established and adhered to. The intended aspiration is that it will be a mainstream, intelligent approach to luxury consumption, grounded in responsibility and ethics.

What leadership philosophy or success mantra powers your journey as a business?

My leadership philosophy is about creating long-term value while navigating the short-term noise around. Good leadership entails efforts on my part, efforts aimed at decision-making that compounds over time.

Therefore, my commitment is to build a business that creates value that spells good judgement in the long term. My approach stems from a foundation of integrity, answerability, and a desire for honest relationships with the clients, teams, and partners. Moreover, our growth is still human, still grounded, and still intentional.
