Brand reputation has emerged as a measurable business asset in today’s evolving corporate environment. Therefore, contemporary PR, marketing, and communication functions do not operate in silos; rather, they influence business outcomes.
Emphasis on data insights, digital platforms, and stakeholder engagement has become an indispensable part of storytelling, shaping new and bold narratives. Today’s AI-driven world demands that agencies assume a pivotal role in managing narratives, crises, and thought leadership, ensuring that communication drives tangible commercial impact.
With nearly three decades of impactful agency leadership, Michelle Pereira, Co-Founder, ElleQuinn Communications, is an accomplished voice in brand and communications marketing. What inspired your foray into the marketing communications sector?
Born and brought up in Mumbai, I have a commerce background with early exposure to advertising and marketing. Over time, my mandates have taken me across multiple regions and international markets.
The bend toward commerce studies led me to pursue an internship at Lintas. My time there drove me towards PR, and I was enamoured by their strategic conversations, disciplined routines, and media-focused mindset. Recognising my interests, I pursued my postgraduate studies at Xavier Institute of Communications, thus transitioning into public relations.
Tell us about your professional journey before turning into an entrepreneur. What key milestones shaped your expertise?
I was fortunate enough that the early years of my professional life were spent as an integral part of several reputed Indian and global PR agencies. I have held impactful leadership positions at both national and international platforms. With a broad range of experience across diverse sectors, I have achieved many milestones that have earned me recognition, respect, and revenue.
Owing to the timeline shift visible in this industry's work culture and overall ecosystem, I learnt the art of staying relevant by being adaptable and agile. These traits have become my forte over time.
What inspired you to co-found ElleQuinn Communications?
Founded in 2018 in Mumbai, ElleQuinn Communications was born out of the realisation that many large agencies run their business development on a flawed model. Often driven by senior leadership in the initial pitch stages to win the mandate, these accounts are then handed off to junior staff who are already overburdened.
This compromises their ability to study the client and sector in depth, which might hamper overall results. Our core expertise lies in solving business problems with workable, reliable solutions based on effective communication.
We are a women-led, women-driven organisation operating on a fully remote, decentralised model since inception. Our nationwide team structure has enabled agility and sustained growth.
What major challenges do you encounter in your role, and how do you navigate through high-stakes marketing campaigns?
In my experience, a bigger challenge than successfully navigating high-stakes campaigns is the client’s requests to venture into such campaigns. With the B2B domain predominant within ElleQuinn Communication, it is imperative that our communications have no loopholes, are fact-checked and thoroughly researched, and include the right number of citations.
For many modern organisations, going viral has become a primary marketing objective. Yet the performance pressure often leads to communication decisions that lack depth and fail to assess risk. The lasting impact of a campaign should be assessed against its reputational impact, and not be compromised for immediate visibility.
Rather than building a legacy over time through consistency, marketing and social media campaigns lead to a quick boost in perceived presence, but are not sustainable in the long term.
How do you envision marketing communications evolving in India?
In today’s era, AI is becoming the primary gateway to information. If the information is not published by the organisation, AI will create the narrative based on the available data. India is a part of this global system, using the same search engines as the rest of the world. The implication is clear: organisations must transition from traditional search engine optimisation to AI optimisation.
Over the next two years, companies that proactively shape their AI narrative will retain control of their reputation, while others risk being defined by algorithmic interpretation.
Looking back, which professional achievements stand out in your journey?
My career has spanned many critical business moments, from overseeing sensitive bank closures to launching new media formats and emerging technologies. I have played a pioneering role in category creation at ElleQuinn Communications, introducing structured conversations around data centres at a time when the media ecosystem had limited awareness of the sector.
How do you stay motivated and focused as a business leader?
Personally, my work stems from being aware of my purpose. Pursuing one’s passion requires a strong support system. Supportive family, friends, and mentors can make a huge difference in women entrepreneurs’ journeys that require immense focus and consistency.
Effective delegation of work is critical. A reliable network is invaluable, and not taking them for granted can sustain long-term personal and professional benefits.
