As a Senior Consultant and cosmetic dermatologist, what are the diverse duties and obligations you undertake?

My foremost responsibility lies in earning the trust of my patients by providing exceptional care in a high-quality environment. Additionally, I am committed to mentoring junior dermatologists in procedural and aesthetic dermatology, especially in our region where such practices are not widely adopted. Serving as the secretary of the Malappuram Dermatology Society affords me numerous opportunities to support and empower my colleagues and budding dermatologists. Through initiatives like procedural dermatology and mentorship programs, I aim to instil confidence in them as they embark on their careers. Moreover, I am a staunch advocate for human empowerment, particularly for the predominantly female staff in my three clinics. I strive to nurture their talents and help them unlock their full potential, fostering an environment of growth and fulfilment.

What are the key obstacles you face as a cosmetic dermatologist, and how do you navigate these challenges?

For me, challenges serve as catalysts for personal and professional growth. At the outset of my career, the prevailing lack of awareness surrounding aesthetic procedures proved to be a significant obstacle. Patients often hesitate due to misconceptions regarding the cost of dermatological treatments and medications. However, my concurrent tenure in government service during those early years provided a measure of reassurance to patients, as they tended to place greater trust in government doctors within our community. Introducing novel techniques and technologies, such as Phototherapy, Lasers, Cryotherapy, and more, were met with scepticism and resistance due to limited awareness and misconceptions among patients. Nevertheless, I approach each obstacle as an opportunity for innovation and education. Despite the initial challenges, I am committed to navigating through them, leveraging them as platforms for continuous learning and advancement in the field of dermatology.

Illuminate the pivotal professional achievement you've reached during your career journey. Furthermore, elaborate on the guiding principles that have fueled your success over the years.

I had the privilege of serving as the secretary of the Malappuram Dermatology Society (MDS), during which I successfully orchestrated several conferences. As the organizing secretary, I oversaw events such as Lupus 2002 and its subsequent editions up to 2023. Additionally, I spearheaded postgraduate procedural dermatology training workshops and assumed the role of workshop coordinator for numerous conferences from 2020 to 2023. My success mantra revolves around continuous learning and staying updated on advancements in dermatology and aesthetics. Furthermore, I am dedicated to nurturing the potential of my subordinates, providing support and guidance to help them achieve their maximum capabilities.
