- The meeting looks to advance cross-national joint efforts of global women's development with the international community
Beijing next week, will host the Global Leaders' Meeting on Women. At this meeting, representing the Chinese government, President Xi Jinping will call on the audience as representatives of governments to come together, in unity, to promote women's rights in our world.
The audience comprises heads of state or government, speakers of parliament, deputy prime ministers, ministers, and representatives of intergovernmental organizations for this two-day meeting.
It will seek ways to follow-up on the underpinning for Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing in 1995 out from which the platform and the Beijing Declaration were created to inform a global framework for gender equality going forward.
It is our hope this coming together can further evidence our objectively urgent call towards gender equality and gender as constituent parts of women's development broadly and also within a specific agenda item we Move Towards a shared future for mankind.
In 2020, Xi originally proposed the idea of organizing this global leaders' conference at a United Nations event commemorating the 25-year anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women.
Over the past decade, but particularly since the 18th National People's Congress in 2012, China has been vocal about women’s equality in its national discourse.
Xi has played a prominent role since 2013, working to empower women as contributors to China and the world at the National Woman Congresses of 2013, 2018, and 2023.
According to official statistics, women comprise 49.9 percent of students in higher education and nearly 43 percent of China’s labor force.
Experts are quick to mention, also apart from China’s people-centered approach to global governance, that hosts focusing on women and girls during this meeting is an extension of a commitment to building global equality and a more inclusive future for all.
