- Vaishnavi Adkar made it to the final of the $100,000 ITF tournament in Bengaluru last week
- Her achievement has been recognized as a positive development for women’s tennis in India
- Grand Slam winner Rohan Bopanna has praised her achievement, saying it was no fluke
Vaishnavi Adkar going on to become a finalist in the $100,000 ITF tournament in Bengaluru last week has been observed to be a major move towards encouraging women's tennis in India.
Rohan Bopanna, who has been a successful Grand Slam champion, also emphasized that the fact that she has reached a W100 final level indicates the maturity and development of her career and her ability to deliver under pressure have been part of her performance.
He also said that the qualities have been absent in Indian women's tennis for quite some time, and her confidence was evident.
Highlighting the significance of the achievement, Rohan noted that a result such as that could translate into an increase of 200 places within the rankings and provide Vaishnavi with access to competition levels like W50, W75, and W100. Such a change would require more discipline regarding how she scheduled and organized her training.
Vaishnavi began playing tennis at age 6, largely due to the experience with it from her mother her father, Nihar Adkar, explained that the idea of completing activities like tennis outside of home was created to ensure the children stayed busy and occupied.
Kedar Shah (the coach to Vaishnavi between 2014 and January 2014) said he was not surprised with her recent success.
According to him, this momentum created by her tournament successes at World University Games and Women's National Championships gave her the motivation to be successful in other tournaments.
Kedar remembers when Vaishnavi was 12 years old and was able to hit the ball well from all areas of the court; he helped develop this ability as she matured.
