Asha Sharma, an experienced tech leader, is now the head of Microsoft Gaming. In addition to being one of many senior female minority leaders of global gaming, this is a leadership change, but also represents a strategic pivot at a moment when gaming is facing unprecedented distractions from competitors as well as evolving consumer habits and AI.
Asha will be stepping into her role at a time when Microsoft Gaming must overcome obstacles such as slowing revenue growth, increasing hardware costs and excessive competition from other providers, such as Sony PlayStation.
In addition, her appointment comes at a significant time in the wake of Microsoft's $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, which expanded its overall gaming portfolio and will now lead to greater expectations from both gamers and shareholders alike.
Microsoft Gaming is well-poised to meet all of these challenges under Asha's leadership, as she produces efficiencies and refines Microsoft's platforms (Xbox console, cloud gaming, the future of interactive entertainment) while simultaneously developing how technology and storytelling will become linked in the coming 10 years.
