Vaishali Qualifies Achieving Chess Milestone Alongside Brother
By: WE Staff | Tuesday, 7 November 2023
The 22-year-old Vaishali, a chess prodigy from India, has earned her spot in the prestigious Women's Candidates tournament. Her extraordinary journey to qualification was marked by defeating three former women's world champions at the Women's Grand Swiss tournament held in the picturesque Isle of Man.
Vaishali's achievement is more than just a personal triumph; it's a significant milestone in the world of chess. What makes this achievement even more unique is that her younger brother, Praggnanandhaa, aged 18, has also secured a place in next year's Candidates tournament, setting a historic record as the first brother-sister duo ever to qualify for this elite competition.
Vaishali's journey to the top of the chess world has been a remarkable one, characterized by tactical brilliance, exceptional play, and sheer determination. Her chess skills have often been overshadowed by her brother's celebrity status in the chess community. However, in recent weeks, Vaishali's quiet and angelic demeanour concealed a fearsome player who took on some of the most prominent names in women's chess.
A global audience witnessed her fearless and strategic gameplay as she overcame formidable opponents, including former women's world champions Mariya Muzychuk, Antoaneta Stefanova, and Tan Zhongyi.
Vaishali's striking victory over one of the Muzychuk sisters from Ukraine, a chess powerhouse, was accomplished in just 23 moves. Her standout performance reinforced her position as the sole leader in the Women's Grand Swiss tournament, effectively guaranteeing her one of the two coveted spots in the upcoming Candidates tournament.
Vaishali is now on the cusp of becoming only the third woman Grandmaster from India, a significant personal aspiration for her. The country has produced exceptional male Grandmasters, but its female representation in this elite category has been comparatively limited. Vaishali's journey, marked by her dedication and unwavering pursuit of chess excellence, has made her a notable figure in India's chess landscape.
In a conversation with Chessbase India, Vaishali attributed her recent success to a mental recalibration. She mentioned that her initial passion for chess was driven by the sheer joy of the game, but in recent years, her focus had shifted towards meeting specific norms and achieving titles.
However, she has rediscovered her love for chess and has learned to balance her dedication to the game with a genuine enjoyment of it. This change in perspective has played a pivotal role in her recent triumphs.
Both Vaishali and Praggnanandhaa are receiving personalized training and support from the Westbridge Anand Chess Academy. Their exceptional performances in chess tournaments reflect the benefits of this training and preparation assistance.
Vaishali's remarkable journey wasn't limited to the Women's Grand Swiss tournament alone. In the week leading up to the Isle of Man event, she participated in the Qatar Masters, one of the year's most robust open chess tournaments.
There, she demonstrated her mettle by facing Grandmasters in eight of the ten rounds and securing her third and final Grandmaster norm. Vaishali's consistent improvement and remarkable skills in her matchups against Grandmasters demonstrated her formidable potential in the chess world.
Vaishali's journey is a testament to her diligent and dedicated approach to chess. While she has often been overshadowed by her brother's fame, she has never lacked in determination. In the chess community, Vaishali is celebrated for her unwavering commitment and notable achievements.
As the chess world anticipates their participation in the Candidate's tournament, this dynamic duo: Vaishali and Praggnanandhaa, is set to leave an indelible mark on the global chess landscape, showcasing their exceptional talent and the strong support of their family.
Vaishali's journey is a reminder that excellence knows no gender and that determination, passion, and a love for the game can lead to remarkable accomplishments, even when operating in the shadow of others' fame.
