The Tamil Nadu government expects 84.32 lakh women across the State to benefit from the expanded ‘Vetri Payanam’ scheme, with Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay reviewing the final preparations ahead of its statewide launch on October 2. The program expands the existing free bus travel facility for women by extending coverage beyond ordinary (white-board) buses.
The expanded scheme is aimed at improving women’s access to public road transport for work, education and healthcare, while supporting greater mobility and improving their overall quality of life. Under the initiative, eligible women will be able to travel free on 12,692 designated government buses across the State.
The expanded coverage will include Express, Limited Stop Service and Deluxe buses operating within corporation and municipal limits, along with Mofussil Ordinary and Ghat Ordinary buses running beyond 40 kilometres. This will significantly widen the range of government bus services available to women at no cost.

The release said that the buses are a part of the seven State Transport Corporations' flocks of 69 per cent. These buses will make 1,65,312 single trips each day, which would cover 85 per cent of the state's bus traffic.
The buses allocated to the beneficiaries will be 165,312 single rides a day (85 per cent of the state's total bus operations), according to an official press release.
Among the preparations for the launch of the scheme, the integration of Electronic Ticketing Machines on the targeted buses has been completed and Officials have been asked to complete system testing and verification by September 25 and conduct a trial run on September 27, the release said.
The scheme was announced in the State Assembly on August 24 with the aim of giving the women and girl students an easier access to workplaces, colleges and other essential medical facilities without any issue of convenience regarding transport charges and it was now all set to be launched on October 2, the release said.
The initiative is expected to reduce the financial burden of daily commuting for women and girl students while improving their access to workplaces, educational institutions and healthcare services. By expanding free travel to a wider range of government bus services, the scheme aims to support greater mobility and make public transport more accessible and convenient for women across Tamil Nadu.
