Thousands of women, including students, attended the Stree-Shakti success meet at Kovur in Nellore district on Monday.
The NDA government headed by the TDP kicked off the Stree-Shakti scheme on August 15, giving free bus travel to women in five categories of APSRTC buses in Andhra Pradesh. The scheme will benefit close to 2.64 crore women in the state.
Speaking to the big crowd, Nellore MP Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy stated that the state government, headed by Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu, is determined to implement all election promises withstanding the economic downturn.
He added that the "super six" NDA alliance election promises were being implemented one after another, indicating that the government is determined to empower people living below the poverty line through welfare and empowerment programs.
Kovur MLA Vemireddy pointed out that the government is incurring an economic burden of ₹2,000 crore every year for the scheme but is still committed to empowering women economically and facilitating their mobility.
She added that the programme not only improves independence but also does away with transport costs for crores of women.
Responding to the opposition's criticism, Prashanti Reddy said the YSRCP's fake propaganda over the scheme has been debunked by its huge success since inception.
She also revealed that the government will release Palle Velugu AC buses soon to further assist women in villages.
