Telangana Trains Women Volunteers in Civil Defence

A five day Civil Defence Volunteer Training Program has been initiated by the Telangana Fire, Disaster Response, Emergency & Civil Defence Department at Malla Reddy Deemed to be University and Veeranari Chakali Ilamma Women’s University.

400 Civil Defence Volunteers are to be trained at Malla Reddy Deemed to be University and 200 women civil defence volunteers attended the third day of the second batch of the five-day civil defence volunteers training program that was held in the Women’s University Veeranari Chakali Ilamma in Hyderabad, India.

This training program is meant to boost the role of women in disaster management and help them acquire essential skills in assisting with emergency operations.

The training program conducted at Veeranari Chakali Ilamma Women’s University, Koti saw the presence of 200 Civil Defense volunteers in addition to a few faculty and non-teaching staff members, demonstrating the collaborative nature of the training program. Through demonstrations and drills the participants will learn how to react responsibly during an emergency situation.

The objective of the project is to increase disaster readiness through equipping women with specialized expertise in rescue, emergency response, risk management, and safety measures.

Through establishing a well-trained group of volunteer citizens, the program is assisting the government in ensuring that the country develops disaster resilience, improves its emergency response capacity, and increases the involvement of women in civil defense and humanitarian aid.

The programs are intended for training and empowering women volunteers in the field of disaster preparedness. Participants receive theoretical training in classroom sessions as well as practical classes in various emergency aspects such as disaster management, emergency response, rescue operation, etc.

According to Director General Vikram Singh Mann, the volunteers will have a major role to play in boosting the state's disaster preparedness efforts through their support to Fire Services, Police Departments, National Disaster Response Force, and others in case of natural or man-made disasters.

The major areas of training includes management of gas leaks in the LPG cylinders, fire safety measures and the proper use of fire extinguishing equipment, firefighting in high rise buildings. The volunteers got an opportunity to observe a live demonstration of the Turn Table Ladder (TTL) vehicle and a simulated building evacuation exercise involving a live fire situation.

As per the authorities, these practical sessions have been devised carefully in order to familiarize the volunteers with techniques of disaster management in emergency situations, so that the volunteers may learn about emergency response methods and better coordinate with professional rescue teams in emergencies.

The five-day training program that will be concluded on July 10 is meant to train the Civil Defence volunteers. The meeting was graced by VC Dr Surya Dhananjay, Deepika from the department of physical education, and senior officials of the Telangana Fire, Disaster Response, Emergency and Civil Defense Department, who reiterated their resolve towards building up community disaster preparedness.
