Sania Mirza and Ankita Raina have been officially selected to represent India in Women's Doubles at the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.
Indian Proffessional tennis player Sania will now become the first female athlete to represent India at four events when she competes in Toky 2020, which begins on July 23, while Ankita Raina will make her debut at the showpiece event.
Kiren Rijiju, the Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports congratulated the Indian duo and tweeted, "I congratulate @mirzasaniaand @ankitachamp, who will represent India in Women's Doubles Tennis at #Tokyo2020 after entries were officially announced. This will be Sania's 4th Olympics while it will be Raina's debut. All the best to them. #Cheer4India."
Ankita Raina and Sania Mirza are currently competing in the ongoing Wimbledon and will face off in the first round of the Mixed Doubles on Friday. Sania has teamed up with Rohan Bopanna, while Ankita has teamed up with Ramkumar Ramanathan to compete in the tournament's first round.
Raina has now reached the main draw of all three Grand Slams in a row, albeit losing in the first round on each occasion. She has a chance to play a second match at Wimbledon in the mixed doubles draw.
Ankita has teamed up with American tennis star Lauren Davis in The Championship's Women's Doubles, while Sania has teamed up with Bethanie Mattek-Sands.
Raina has had a rewarding year, beginning with a stellar performance in the Billie Jean King Cup on the WTA tour, which earned her entry into the main draw of Slams. Another feather in her cap will be her debut in the women's doubles event alongside Mirza, who will be making her joint-record fourth appearance.
Earlier in the day, Sania and her doubles partner MattekSands advanced to the second round of Wimbledon after defeating Desirae Krawczyk and Alexa Guarachi in the first round of women's doubles 7-5, 6-3.
