President Droupadi Murmu, in her Durga Puja greetings on 19 October 2026, urged citizens to extend their reverence for Maa Durga beyond religious rituals by ensuring respect and dignity for women in everyday life.

In a message shared on X, the President extended her greetings to Indians in the country and abroad, describing Durga Puja as a celebration of India’s spiritual heritage, cultural diversity and unity.

“On the auspicious occasion of Durga Puja, I extend my heartfelt greetings and best wishes to all Indians residing in the country and abroad,” President Murmu said.

Key Highlights:

  • President Murmu urges citizens to uphold women’s dignity in everyday life.
  • She links true devotion to Maa Durga with respect for women.
  • She highlights Durga Puja’s role in promoting unity, culture and national progress.

She highlighted the festival's cultural and spiritual significance, which commemorates Maa Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura and symbolises the triumph of good over evil. According to Murmu, Maa Durga is revered as a divine force who blesses people with wisdom and inspires them to work for the welfare of others.

“The festival of Durga Puja reflects India’s rich spiritual heritage. The victory of Maa Durga over Mahishasura is an inspiring example of the triumph of divine forces over evil. Maa Durga is worshipped as the deity who blesses people with wisdom to work for the well-being of others,” she said.

The President also noted that Durga Puja showcases India’s traditions, lifestyle, art and culture, while bringing people from different communities and regions together. She said the festival represents the country’s pluralistic cultural identity and provides a shared space for celebration and social harmony.

A central focus of her message was the need to translate the worship of feminine power into meaningful social behaviour. She emphasised that celebrating Maa Durga should also encourage people to recognise and uphold the dignity of women in their personal and social lives.

“Durga Puja reflects our tradition of revering the strength of women. We can express our true devotion to Maa Durga by ensuring respect for women in every aspect of personal and social lives,” she stated.

The message places women’s dignity and empowerment at the heart of the festival’s broader social significance. Rather than limiting reverence for feminine strength to religious observances, Murmu called for it to become part of everyday conduct.

Concluding her message, the President prayed for the welfare and prosperity of citizens and the country’s continued development.

“I pray that the blessings of Maa Durga bring happiness and prosperity to all citizens and that our nation continues on the path of rapid development,” she said.

Also known as Durgotsava or Sharodotsava, Durga Puja is an annual Hindu festival dedicated to Goddess Durga. Its celebrations culminate in Vijayadashami, or Dussehra, marking her victory over Mahishasura and reinforcing the festival’s enduring message of the victory of good over evil.
