In a recent interview with an Indian news agency, PTI (Press Trust of India), Prime Minister Narendra Modi outlined the Government's strategy for the economic transformation of India.

These goals are growing the economy through structural reform, expanding manufacturing capacity, helping women become economic contributors and expanding India's presence in the Global Marketplace by integrating more deeply into it.

The Prime Minister stressed that India is beginning a period of economic growth and is pursuing its goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.

Modi also noted that recent trade agreements with major economies such as the EU, UK, Australia and UAE show that India's global trade relations have improved (regarding both competitiveness and consistency) and that India now has free trade agreements (FTAs) with 38 partners (countries), which has helped to significantly improve India's overall trade system.

The Prime Minister believes that the long-term goal of these FTAs is to connect Indian manufacturers and service providers to Global Value Chain (GVC's) components, especially concerning Micro and Small/Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and export-focused industries.

With respect to the Government of India's Union Budget 2026-27, the Prime Minister characterized the capital expenditure of ₹12.2 lakh crores as an investment in long-term (infrastructure) projects (e.g. railways, roads, freight).

Modi spoke out about how manufacturing and job creation will be improved by expanding upon India's capacity to produce globally competitive products in various industries like electronics, defence, pharmaceuticals, and toys, among other areas.

Furthermore, he mentioned how growing manufacturing sectors can provide additional jobs to individuals across many different levels of skills while also providing jobs for those employed in the related service and supporting industries.

When discussing technology, Modi stated that the Budget will support and build India's digital infrastructure through the focus on information technologies, data centers, and artificial intelligence technologies.

He also mentioned how critical it is to have secure data systems and regulatory frameworks, such as the Digital Personal Data Protection law, to support technological innovations while also protecting user rights. In his last remarks, he expressed confidence that the incentives offered for creating data centers will lead to more investment and thus more job opportunities.

As for Defence, Modi stated that ₹7.85 lakh crore has been allocated in the current Budget and that this budget will focus on modernising the military and procuring more domestically produced goods.

According to him, defence exports have risen sharply over the last ten years, and he re-emphasised the commitment that the government has made to achieving self-reliance in domestic defence manufacturing over the long term.
