- The new government has formed a new 15-member cabinet with a new prime minister named Balendra Shah
- There is a certain level of gender representation within the new government with five women making up the cabinet
As the new government outlines its policy directions, five women have been added to Prime Minister Balendra Shah's first 15-member cabinet, providing some representation regarding gender.
The following ministers were sworn in at Shital Niwas on Friday: Sobita Gautam, Sita Badi, Nisha Mehta, Pratibha Rawal, and Geeta Chaudhary.
The appointments made will form part of the overall cabinet that has been formed by the government that is led by the Rastriya Swatantra Party and have quickly taken over to begin administrative functions.
Among the female ministers, Sobita was appointed as minister for law, justice and parliamentary affairs, Sita assigned to Women, Children, and Senior Citizens Ministry and Geeta appointed as the minister for MoALD.
Nisha has been appointed as the minister of health and population with additional responsibility for Water Supply and Pratibha has been appointed as the minister for MoFAGA, as well as with the responsibilities of managing Land Management, Cooperatives, and Poverty Alleviation.
Ministries have assigned portfolios within key areas such as law, health, agriculture, and social development to women. The success of these appointments will ultimately depend upon the effectiveness of law and policy enforcement through administration in the future.
Sita is an important appointment because she is the first Minister from the Badi community, which has been historically marginalized in Nepal. Her appointment to cabinet is a statement of greater social representation within government from the grassroots level to cabinet.
She has previously worked on women's economic empowerment through skills-based training, and she has indicated interest in pursuing outcome-oriented social reform initiatives.
Law Minister Sobita indicated her desire to implement reforms while delivering justice more quickly after taking office at Singha Durbar. Many cases of sexual and gender-based violence are at the forefront of complaints regarding justice delivery in her opinion.
She stated amendments may be necessary to several existing laws such as The National Criminal Procedure Code 2074, The Criminal Offense and Punishment Determination And Implementation Act 2074 and The National Civil Code 2074.
