Mandi reported as Most Unsafe District for Women in Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh district, Mandi has been reported as the most unsafe district for women in recent reports. The years 2023 and 2024 was seen a surge in molestation and rape cases for women in Mandi that led to a concerning situation for women's safety and security. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu led Himachal as a popular Indian tourist destination, however, reports mention that in the first 8 months of 2024, Mandi has reported the highest number of 36 rape and 50 molestation cases. In contrast, in 2023 around 34 rape and 56 molestation cases have been registered.

Apart from Mandi, other districts of Himachal Pradesh including Sirmaur (30), Kangra (25), Shimla (25), Solan (18), Chamba (16), Hamirpur (3) rape cases have been registered in 2024. Reports state that 242 rape cases were registered in 2023 whereas 210 rape cases have been registered in 2024. In addition to this, women feel unsafe and fall prey to molestation in several districts of Himachal Pradesh, as 330 cases were registered in 2024 and 337 cases in 2023. Mandi saw 50 such cases, Sirmaur with 49 cases, Kangra with 46 cases, Shimla saw 34 cases, Solan with 31 cases, Chamba with 22 cases, Hamirpur with 20 cases, Nurpur with 18 cases, Kullu and Bilaspur with 16 each, BBN with 11 cases, Kinnaur with 3 cases, Nurpur with 12 cases, and Lahaul with 1 case.

Surprisingly, Spiti, the famous tourist spot for its serene view has not registered any case against women's harassment and has been declared as the safest district in Himachal Pradesh. DIG, Law and Order, Ranjana Chauhan mentioned that women's harassment cases have declined in the present year due to major steps taken by the Police Department.
