The Malkajgiri Police Commissionerate has started a new community policing program to encourage women and make them a more active force in crime prevention and neighborhood security called 'Sahachari'. The program, launched in collaboration with the Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) and the Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP), reached almost 3,000 women from self-help groups (SHGs) in the Commissionerate limits.
The initiative was parallel simultaneously at "Bowenpally" covering the participants from Malkajirigram zone and at "Nagole" involving the participants from L.B. Nagar and Uppal zone. The police hope to establish a grassroots network of women who are informed and can act as community safety ambassadors to speak out early on crimes and raise awareness about public safety in their neighborhoods through Sahachari.
The program was delivered on a variety of topics that included training on women's safety, child protection and crime prevention. Sessions were held on Legal Rights, Personal Safety, Cybercrime Awareness, Emergency Response Mechanism, Anti-Drug Campaign and Offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The role of community policing and the services provided by Bharosa Centres, SHE Teams and Women Police Stations were also explained by the Police officials.
Key Highlights:
- Malkajgiri Police launched the 'Sahachari' initiative, training 3,000 SHG women
- Participants learned about women's safety, cybercrime, legal rights, and police support services
- The program aims to strengthen community policing and encourage crime reporting
Women who participated were asked to collaborate with the Law Enforcement agencies, to report any crime without fear and to spread awareness of the support channels available to their communities. The training also exposed the participants to the role of Women Police Stations, Centres for Domestic and Economic Empowerment of Women, Anti-Human Trafficking Unit and services provided to the victims such as Counseling, Legal Assistance, Rehabilitation and Psychological Support.
Speaking on the occasion, B. Sumathi, Commissioner of Police, Malkajgiri, emphasized the importance of active involvement of the community for effective policing. She asked women to be brave and tell the police what was happening to them and promised to help them. The Commissioner says the Sahachari program will enhance the relationship between the police and the community, boost crime reporting, and help to make communities safer for women and children.
In his speech, MEPMA Additional Mission Director N. Yadagiri Rao welcomed the initiative and appealed to the SHG members to have the discussions on safety regularly in their monthly meetings. He urged participants to spread the knowledge acquired from the program to other women in their neighborhoods, which would help to increase awareness about legal rights, crime prevention and government support services.
The program was attended by senior police officers including Deputy Commissioners of Police from some wings like Malkajgiri, L.B. Nagar, Uppal, Women Safety wing with MEPMA and SERP who interacted with the participants.
The launch of Sahachari has been a shift towards community led policing where women are at the core of public security. The initiative aims to build stronger community engagement by providing the members of the SHG with the practical knowledge, awareness of law and direct access to police support systems for making women, children and vulnerable groups safer and more secure across the Malkajgiri Police Commissionerate.
