  • All public transportation vehicles must have Vehicle Location Tracking Devices (VLTD) installed by the Haryana government
  • With a particular emphasis on safeguarding female passengers, the initiative seeks to improve commuter safety

The Haryana government has decided to fit Vehicle Location Tracking Devices (VLTDs) in all public transport vehicles with a view to greatly enhancing passenger safety—especially of women and children. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced the project during a recent meeting of the transport department.

Nayab instructed the officials to work according to district-wise implementation milestones and integrate the VLTD system smoothly into the '112' emergency response network for stronger reach. Under the Nirbhaya framework of the Ministry of Road Transport, the VLTD system will provide real-time location tracking and emergency alert features.

Besides improving safety, the Chief Minister also underlined the need for effective post-accident analysis to identify systemic problems and avoid future accidents. The state government also intends to increase the fleet of electric buses, verify the condition of school transport vehicles, and introduce new-age techniques for increasing collection of revenues. These are steps towards an overall strategy for creating a safer, more efficient, and future-proof transport infrastructure in the state.

The deployment of electric buses and the convergence of vehicle tracking technologies are critical to improving the efficiency and safety of public transportation. VLTDs give authorities the ability to keep an eye on public transportation in real time, react quickly to emergencies, enforce adherence to routes, and improve passenger safety, especially for women and children.

In addition, such systems improve the overall safety network by facilitating enhanced coordination with the emergency services like the '112' helpline. Increasing fleets of cleaner, greener, and quieter electric buses enable both the modernization of mass transport and greener, cleaner mobility. Overall, these projects constitute a significant leap in establishing a secure, accessible, and future-proof transport environment.
