Kadapa Set to Elect First Woman Mayor in Historic Contest

Kadapa, a key city in the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh, is preparing to elect its first woman mayor. The contest features National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate N Suvarna and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) candidate Bandi Deepthi, who are competing for leadership of one of the state’s oldest urban local bodies.

Established as a municipality in 1868, Kadapa was upgraded to a municipal corporation in 2004. Despite its long civic history, the city has never had a woman mayor. The upcoming election marks an important step in women’s political representation in the region, following TDP’s Reddeppagari Madhavi Reddy becoming Kadapa’s first woman MLA in 2024.

The broader municipal corporation contest has largely favoured the ruling alliance, with Telugu Desam Party (TDP) candidates securing all 63 seats that were decided unanimously out of the 66 corporate seats.

Key Highlights:

  • Kadapa is set to elect its first woman mayor, with NDA candidate N Suvarna competing against YSRCP candidate Bandi Deepthi
  • TDP secured 63 of the 66 corporate seats unanimously, strengthening the ruling alliance’s position in the municipal corporation
  • NDA MLA Madhavi Reddy expressed confidence in Suvarna’s victory and rejected allegations of violence during the nomination process

However, the mayoral race remains competitive, with both Suvarna and Deepthi campaigning to secure the top civic position.

The race for corporate’s seats has become a two horse race, except for a third division where a friendly fight is being played between Jana Sena and BJP candidates.

With the nomination deadline looming on the horizon Wednesday evening, the attention is now on the mayoral race rather than the results in any of the various divisions. No solution has been found on civic issues, which remain the main ones on the political agenda, and the rhetoric is getting louder.

In a statement to the media, Madhavi Reddy, the MLA from NDA, said he was confident that Suvarna won the elections as she has a clear strategy to tackle the urban challenges of the city.

Madhavi Reddy rejected the charges of violence during nomination process and lashed out at the YSRCP's protest as uncalled for. She stated that opposition duly declined their nominations and they were not forced or coerced.

She also pointed out that if the YSRCP's mayoral candidate is elected, he will not get any assistance in a civic body, which is completely dominated by the ruling government.
