Professor Dr Jyoti Bhakare has been appointed Vice-Chancellor of Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU), Nagpur, for a five-year term. She will succeed Professor Dr Vijender Kumar, who served as the university’s founding Vice-Chancellor.
The appointment was made by MNLU Nagpur Chancellor Justice Atul S Chandurkar. The decision was announced through a notification issued by MNLU Nagpur Registrar Deepak L Bhagwat on September 18.
Jyoti currently serves as Senior Professor of Law at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), where she has been associated with the law faculty since 2009. She has also served as Director of the SPPU Law School since January 2022 and headed the Department of Law from 2019 to 2023. Between August 2024 and January 2026, she served as the university’s Officiating Registrar.

Prior to joining SPPU, Jyoti was serving as the Officiating Principal of DES Law College Pune from 2004-2009. Since 2003, she has also been serving as the Officiating Principal of Modern Law College, Pune, from 2003 to 2004. Jyoti is a LLB and LLM graduate from Shivaji University, Kolhapur.
Jyoti's appointment follows the completion of two terms by Prof (Dr) Vijender Kumar as the Founder Vice-Chancellor of MNLU Nagpur. Kumar, in a LinkedIn post, stated that he was the Founder Vice-Chancellor of the university from June 1, 2016 till August 31, 2026.
Talking about his time there, Vijender has stated that at the time of his assuming office in 2016, MNLU Nagpur "was just an idea". He attributed the growth of the university to the joint and concerted endeavors of the entire community such as faculty, administration, students and donors, as well as statutory authorities and government of Maharashtra.
Expressing gratitude to the stakeholders of the University, he shared his pride on what MNLU community has developed during his tenure. I'm leaving the office with great pride of how this community has come together and with great faith in what lies ahead for MNLU Nagpur" Vijender said.
He also congratulated MNLU, Nagpur and wished it all the best and expressed his continuation in legal and justice education. Professor (Dr) VP Tiwari took over the reins of MNLU Nagpur as the Acting Vice-Chancellor after Vijender's retirement.
