Jairam Ramesh Calls for All-party Meet to Discuss Women's Quota

  • Jairam Ramesh has sought an all-party meeting on the proposed amendment to the Women’s Reservation Act
  • This has been stated in a context where the amendment to the act is to be introduced in Parliament

Jairam Ramesh has urged the Central Government to hold an all-party meeting in connection with the proposed amendment to the Women’s Reservation Act.

He said in a press conference that consultation should be held on a wider scale before introducing the amendment in Parliament.

Jairam expressed regret over the fact that the proposed amendment is being introduced in Parliament in a manner described as “divisive political practices.”

This amendment, designated as the Constitution (One Hundred and Sixth Amendment) Act, 2023, or the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, provides for a higher political role for women in Parliament through a provision for a 33 percent reservation in the Lok Sabha.

A one-third reservation is provided in the Lok Sabha and all the State Legislative Assembly Seats, including the Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

Currently, the Legislation regarding this amendment (The Act was passed into law in September 2023) provides for the overall quota of reservations for women to also include a reservation for Scheduled Caste women and Scheduled Tribe women. This Law aims to enhance women’s participation in making political decisions within India’s federal system.

In a different matter, the Lok Sabha has been adjourned until Monday due to continued disruption of House proceedings by Opposition members protesting the governments announced shortage of LPG cylinders, which was made public today.
