- ITBP is setting up 10 all-women border posts along the 3,488 km India-China LAC that it guards
- The move is part of the force's "forwardisation" strategy that began after the 2020 Ladakh clash
- ITBP has increased its forward-deployed border outposts from 180 to 215
ITBP (The Indo-Tibetan Border Police) guards the 3,488 km India-China Line of Actual Control. The force is setting up 10 all-women border posts along this difficult high-altitude frontier, the force's director general said.
As part of its "forwardisation" strategy launched after the 2020 Ladakh clash, the ITBP has moved 215 border outposts forward along India's northern and eastern borders, up from 180 earlier. Director General Praveen Kumar shared these updates during the 64th Raising Day parade held in Jammu.
He said this expansion has been supported by the creation of seven new battalions and a sector headquarters, which have improved supervision in forward areas. The new units, comprising around 9,400 personnel, were sanctioned by the Centre in 2023.
The DG said the force plans to establish 41 more forward bases along the LAC to further enhance security and coordination.
Two new all-women border posts are being created at Lukung (Ladakh) and Thangi (Himachal Pradesh) as part of efforts to increase the number of women in combat duties, with eight more to follow along the frontier.
He further added that ITBP training institutions have been reorganized and five new skill modules were introduced including training in mountain warfare and tactical survival.
The ITBP, which was raised in 1962 and functions under the Union Home Ministry, deploys over 1 lakh personnel at border posts situated between 9,000 and over 14,000 feet, where harsh weather and low oxygen levels are common.
