Indian Women's Football Team Secures Record 13-0 AFC Win Over Mongolia

  • In Tashkent, the Indian women's football team defeated Mongolia by a record 13–0, their largest triumph in an official AFC game
  • With five goals in a dominant performance, Pyari Xaxa spearheaded the attack

The women's football team from India came up with a record-breaking 13–0 thrashing of Mongolia in Tashkent on June 23, the largest margin of victory in an official AFC game and the fourth-highest team ever. Pyari Xaxa was the star of the show with five goals, along with three assists by Grace Dangmei and a penalty.

India was up 4–0 at half before dominating the second period on a slippery field. Soumya Guguloth delighted with clever dribbling and a left-footed volley, Rimpa Haldar pinned the defense back, and substitutes Malavika and Priyadharshini Selladurai scored their debut international goals.

This emphatic victory increases India's goal difference and adds steel to their qualification attempt at the top of the qualifying group of the AFC Women's Asian Cup in Australia next year. The team had earlier scored a 14–0 victory over the Maldives in a friendly and an 18–0 victory against Bhutan in the 2010 SAFF Championship — their largest victory thus far.

Even with the dominant display, head coach Crispin Chettri called for greater clinical finishing. "We need to be more professional and finish the opportunities we make. We can do better," he stated. He praised improvement in flank movement and encouraged players to attempt shots from outside the box and be composed in midfield.

India's next game is against Timor-Leste on June 28, followed by a crucial meeting with hosts Thailand on July 5. With momentum in their favour, the Blue Tigresses are well and truly announcing themselves in the qualifying tournament early on.
