  • The Indian women’s team was beaten by the Malaysian team in the qualifiers
  • India started off strong by scoring a 6-4 lead but could not sustain it

Due to their defeat to Malaysia, the Indian women’s basketball team will not be competing in the final round of the FIBA 3×3 Asian Cup 2026 in Singapore.

India was ranked 88th in the world by FIBA while Malaysia ranked 44th; India lost their first match against Malaysia 16 to 13 in pool play of group B of the tournament reported the website, Olympics.com.

India took an early 6 to 4 lead but could not hold on as Malaysia came back to win the game. Pushpa Senthil Kumar scored six points for India while Dharshini Thirunavukkarasu contributed by making two baskets from beyond the three-point arc.

In their second match of the tournament against Turkmenistan, India won handily 21 to 4. For India, Sreekala Rani and Pushpa each scored six points, Dharshini scored five points, and Sanjana Ramesh contributed four points for their large win.

Although they won their last match against the Philippines, India was eliminated by Malaysia 21-9. This means that Malaysia was the only team to qualify for the main draw from this qualifying pool. Only one team from each qualifying pool is able to move on to the main draw of the tournament.

This is the second consecutive year that the Indian women's national team did not progress beyond the Qualifying Round. The Indian women defeated Guam in their last qualifying match, but could not advance due to losses to Hong Kong China and Chinese Taipei.

The Indian men also progressed to the main draw after defeating Bahrain, Kazakhstan, and Hong Kong China. They will next face Qatar and New Zealand in the main draw. The top two finishers in each of the main draw groups will qualify for the quarter-finals; last year, the Indian men's team reached the quarter-finals.
