India Wins Third Straight Women's Junior Asia Cup Title

Indian junior women's hockey team has clinched the AHF Women's Junior Asia Cup 2026 title with a 1-0 victory over hosts China in the final of the tournament. In the 17th minute, Sanika Chandrakant Mane struck FIH's biggest goal for India as the team defended the title and qualified for the FIH Junior Women's Hockey World Cup.

The victory marked India’s third consecutive Women’s Junior Asia Cup title after previous triumphs in 2023 and 2024. The team also went unbeaten in the 2026 edition, further reflecting the rising power of the junior women's hockey scene in India and the presence of young female talent on the international arena.

The play was very competitive from the first whistle, with China possessing the ball in turn and trying to put the pressure on India. But the Indian defence side didn't allow the hosts to form a clear shot in the first 40 minutes.

The breakthrough came early on in the second quarter for India. Sanika did a great job in positioning herself inside the Chinese circle, and managed to get the stick to a long slap-push before delivering a neat deflection to clear the goalkeeper Xu Mengjiao. Her goal put India up 1-0 and would eventually prove to be the decisive one.

China had a chance to equalise on the ball's only penalty corner but the kick was ruled out after it went over the permitted height on the backboard. India also had a chance to go ahead of the Chinese before half-time with the midfielder Khaidem Shileima Chanu, who made the Chinese goalkeeper react quickly for a save.

China continued to push for an equaliser after the break, but India’s defence remained disciplined. The Indian players stayed compact around their circle and successfully intercepted dangerous attacking moves. Their defensive resilience allowed them to protect the narrow advantage until the final whistle.

Sanika was among India’s leading scorers during the tournament, finishing with seven goals, the same tally as Bangladesh’s RIMON Sharika. India’s Supriya and Purnima Yadav also made significant contributions, scoring six goals each during the competition.

India had entered the tournament with strong preparation under newly appointed head coach Tim White. The squad undertook an exposure tour of the United Kingdom in July, playing seven matches against Scotland’s senior team and the junior sides of the United States, England and Belgium. The preparation was aimed at giving the young players greater international experience before facing Asia’s leading teams.

White had earlier highlighted the team’s preparation and confidence ahead of the tournament, saying, “We feel our game is in good order and we are well prepared to play against the best teams in Asia.”

India won the first game of the competition against South Korea 4-1 and had a great run through the Elite Pool. The team went on to defeat Pakistan 19-0 in the quarter-final, and South Korea 5-1 in the semi-final, before defeating China at the final.

President Droupadi Murmu congratulated the junior men's and women's hockey teams for their historic victory, stating that their effort had brought immense pride to the nation and they were doing a great job in showing commitment, discipline and teamwork.

In addition, Hockey India also announced a monetary reward of ₹3 lakh to be distributed among each player and ₹1.5 lakh among the support staff who helped the women's team to win the title.

The third consecutive continental crown strengthens India’s position in junior women’s hockey while giving the next generation of Indian women athletes an important platform to progress towards senior international competition.
