- She has almost a decade of experience within the South African games industry
The International Game Developers Association (IGDA) has elected Limpho Moeti as its new chairman, taking over from Zak Whaley, whose term expired in June. Limpho is the first global south chair in the history of the organisation.
She arrives with close to ten years of experience in South Africa's gaming sector, starting at indie game studio Freelives, where she co-founded and worked on the Playtopia game event in Cape Town before joining Semblance developer Nyamakop. She most recently worked as a business development manager at consultancy RocketRide Games.
Aside from her work, Limpho has been engaged in the South African gaming scene by hosting game jams, attending industry events, and giving talks.
In a 2024 interview with GamesIndustry.biz, she reiterated the need to establish a sustainable and diverse games industry that showcases the diversity of its players.
The IGDA also made new leadership appointments: Nazih Fares of Le Cabinet du Savoir Ludique as vice chair, Mafalda Duarte, Women in Games ambassador coordinator, as secretary, and Tim Cullings, executive director of Seattle Indies, as treasurer.
Whaley will serve out the remaining time on the board as chair emeritus until March 2026.
Most members under the new executive board are women, non-binary developers, and individuals of color, a reflection of its continued dedication to diversity.
The organization's emphasis is on expanding mentorship programs, forming new partnerships, and strengthening support networks to bridge developers with opportunity.
IGDA Executive Director Jakin Vela explained that the leadership will focus on international cooperation, mentorship, and long-term collaborations.
Limpho hailed the appointment, stating that the organisation will continue advocating for inclusivity, sustainability, and opportunities for game developers globally.
