A report released by the Women’s Advancement Committee of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in India (JCCII) highlights the story of YKK India Pvt. Ltd. as a model of how Japanese businesses in India are working towards creating a more inclusive workplace.
The report discusses initiatives towards increasing professional opportunities for women, including Japanese expatriates working in India on assignments.
The report, titled “Interview with Women Working in India – YKK India Pvt. Ltd.,” offers views from management and employees to understand the concept of diversity in the workplace and how perceptions of working in India are impacting career opportunities for women in Japanese businesses in India.
The report offers views from Kenji Okuma, General Manager-Sales & Marketing, and Nodoka Shibahara, Senior Executive-ISAMEA. These views offer a glimpse into how the organization has been working towards moving away from the conventional workforce and embracing a more diverse workforce culture.
According to the report, “The increasing involvement of women in Japanese corporate activities in India can be related to the following corporate objectives: flexibility, diversity, and competitiveness.”
According to this report, YKK India has previously had a predominantly-male workforce which originated because of many operational considerations that also include safety.
The new direction for the company is one that is in alignment with YKK’s overall corporate philosophy, which supports the notion of diversity in the workplace. With respect to the country of India, using Japanese female expatriate employees is one strategy indicated in the report to help bring diversity into the organization.
The report also identifies safety and the quality of life as two key reasons to consider when sending employees outside their home country.
The report states that the location of YKK India will provide expatriate employees with housing, transportation, and a number of other services required by expatriate staff who is working in the Delhi-Gurugram area.
The report illustrates how the company has adopted safety methods, including travel advisories and protection of female employees.
