  • Games witnessed a significant rise in women athletes

Gulmarg hosts nearly 900 athletes across India for sixth Khelo India Winter Games this February. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha were present at its official launch cheering the participants for an inclusive competition ahead.

Women’s participation has been one of the major highlights of this year’s Games, beating the numbers that turned up at the first Games. This is a clear indication of the move towards balanced gender participation in winter sports in India.

Chief Minister Omar reiterated Gulmarg’s consistent performance as a premier host destination, evidenced by the sixth consecutive edition of the Games being held here. He called for sustained investment in facilities and high-performance infrastructure to prepare athlete’s for international championships and the Olympic stage. Adoption of solutions like artificial snowmaking to sustain winter sports and tourism amid the changing climate conditions was also suggested.

A first-time participant described the games as inspiring despite limited snow challenges, encouraging more young women to participate. Other players also noted improved competition levels preparing them for international sports events. Participants also underscored Gulmarg’s superior snow quality and world-class terrain, reinforcing its position as India’s premier winter sports hub. The games will take place between February 23 and February 26.
