Gujarat Police Conduct 5000+ Cyber Awareness Programs

The Gujarat Police has held over 5,000 cyber safety awareness programs across the state in the first two weeks of a month-long campaign to warn women and children against cyber threats like sextortion, deep fakes, cyber stalking and online grooming.

The 28-day campaign has been launched as part of the state government's cyber safety initiative to create awareness, prevent and enforce safer usage of digital platforms and support the victims of cyber abuse.

Gujarat Police says that during the first two weeks of the campaign, 5,289 awareness programs were held by the She-Team and Cyber Cell. The initiative is being put in place under the supervision of Director General of Police (DGP) G.S. Malik, which incorporates community outreach, technology-based surveillance, victim assistance, cyber awareness and timely legal measures to fight against cybercrime.

Online safety of women and children is a crucial issue in the digital era, CID Crime (Women Cell) Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Ajay Chaudhary said.

Gujarat Police is working towards establishing a safer digital world with its ‘Operation Surakshit Cyberspace’ feature by creating awareness among women and children about cyber threats like deep fakes and sextortion. Chaudhary said Gujarat Police is always ready to keep the safety and security of all its citizens intact.

The campaign has already reached lakhs of people across Gujarat through awareness drives and educational programs and public outreach initiatives, according to the police.

In the first week, Gujarat Police conducted 1,874 awareness and outreach campaigns, which included 185 awareness campaigns across the state on digital and physical safety, 438 Cyber Safety Day camps in schools and 336 Kishori Diwas awareness programs for adolescent girls.

The police have also organized 318 awareness sessions for parents and 281 training sessions for teachers to sensitize them about the cyber risks children encounter and how to respond to these issues. Besides, 207 Awareness programs were also conducted in colleges and 109 cyber rallies were organized in the districts to create awareness about digital safety.

During the second week the theme was specific Cybercrime and online safety with 4,172 thematic programs and public awareness camps carried out throughout the state.

Of those, 743 programs were on social media safety and responsible online behavior, 578 programs on deep fakes and crime, 514 programs on cyber stalking prevention and 520 programs under the umbrella of ‘Anti-sextortion Day’. 512 gaming safety programs, 466 online grooming prevention sessions and 461 public awareness camps in remote areas were also part of the campaign.

In this regard, Gujarat Police have given specific roles to all level police officers ranging from Constable to police inspectors. Officers being assessed on 5 parameters: awareness generation, prevention, enforcement, quality of investigation, public trust.

Police have advised anyone who has fallen victim to cybercrime or online harassment to report it as soon as possible to the National Cyber Helpline and submit a complaint to aid in timely action.
