Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM), a four-week program, ended on a high note at NTPC-Ramagundam on Friday. Sunil Kumar, Chief General Manager, NTPC Ramagundam, spoke at the closing ceremony, expressing his optimism that GEM would give a boost to girl empowerment in the district and praising the team for their outstanding efforts in making the event a huge success.

“We take a lot of satisfaction from playing our role in creating ‘gems’ through this well-planned residential programme. They are our future brand ambassadors” He said and praised the children and their parents, who materialized NTPC’s unique idea of GEM.

In truth, the mission had only just begun, and there was still a long way to go in terms of broadening the scope of female empowerment.

He said that, in addition to continuing the same programme next year, they planned to provide opportunities to the best GEM trainee girls by enrolling them in NTPC-run schools and allowing them to participate in NTPC's cultural programme.

General Manager (project) Prasanjit Pal stressed the importance of the programme, saying that it was created to groom young girls from village schools and catapult them into the mainstream. He explained that the goal was to provide a platform for village girl students by providing quality inputs on academics, personality development, health, hygiene, and overall grooming.

The cultural program by GEM students enthralled the audience with semi-classical, yoga asanas, and dance performances on empowering women and singing on girl empowerment and education, mime act (save girl child concept), skit, martial art, and pyramid formation, among other activities.

The dignitaries had previously visited the exhibition to see GEM activities and examine the arts and crafts creative displays. The dignitaries then presented the GEM girls with certificates and mementos. The program included all GMs, Deepthi Mahila Samithi president Usha Kumar, other office bearers and members, trade union leaders, and others.
